Couple of months ago I was watching a Japanese TV documentary on the topic of ニ担ニ蓄窶ーツョ窶「~. At first I thought the whole thing is a set up for the Japanese game show. Later on I decided to find out more about ニ担ニ蓄窶ーツョ窶「~ and to my surprise, those hoard houses (sorry can't find a good English word) actually exist in Japan and the numbers are increasing. The problem started to attract media attention in the 1980s.
I was really intrigued by this and decided to read some more about it. Here is what I dug up:
According to some Japanese studies, ニ担ニ蓄窶ーツョ窶「~ problem can be categorized into three main types:
1.House owners collect miscellaneous things as a hobby.
2.House owners too lazy to clean/organize living environment.
3.House owners who refuse to throw away useless stuff in their houses.
There are two reasons behind the forming of ニ担ニ蓄窶ーツョ窶「~:
1.Rise in living standard which results in buying large amount of unnecessary stuff
2.ADHD (Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder), about 3-5% of Japanese have ADHD.
The first reason is understandable and I think many of us are in some ways affected by the mainstream media in buying products we don't really need. However, most of us aren't familiar with ADHD. Major symptoms for patients with ADHD include inattentive, attention-deficit, hyperactive, and impulsive.
Has anyone in Japan came across ニ担ニ蓄窶ーツョ窶「~ in Japan or know someone who is a hoarder? I consider myself a mild hoarder mostly due to my unwillingness to throw away things.
