You are both correct, but it has a meaning of "and see how it goes" as well, as opposed to 〜(よ)うとする which means to just try to do something. The difference is really clear when speaking about past events: 寿司を食べてみた is "I tried sushi (to see how it tasted/how I liked it)," whereas 寿司を食べようとした is more like "I tried eating sushi (but I couldn't/I threw it up)."
