Hi.

From my book, it says 'ga/kedo' at the end of a sentence is something u put for commen ground to build upon, or something.

ex from book:
午前と午後の便がありますが･･･
There's a morning and afternoon flight. (so, which would you like?)

I get that, i guess.

Let's see:

A: 二人の女の子は僕が好きですが･･･ (Two girls like me. [so which should I go out with?])
B: 背が高いのと出かけますね。 (Go out with the tall one.)

Does this make sense? I mean, the 'ga'. I dunno if the sentences make sense. But the situation, would the 'ga' work??

Anyway, I thought I understood what it meant, but now I'm not sure. I've seen some sentence where I couldn't see a reason to build upon it or something...

Is there a meaning I don't know about? Is there any English translation?

It is like giving the person the option to ask more on the subject. Try to think of it like an open ended statement. The Japanese assume a lot while speaking very little. It is a hard language to grasp but stick with it

Moo tabemasita ga
(I) already ate but (I'm still hungry/it tasted bad/I got sick from drinking to much and threw it up/etc)

I think your '2 girls like me' is maybe not the best example. Maybe person A would say his line, then say something like どうしよう or どうしようかな

Think of 'ga' as setting up the person you are talking to for their turn to say something. You've been saying something, you want them to do something or respond about something, but it would be a bit rude to just say to them directly 'do this' or 'answer my question about this.'

A great way to use ga is if you have a request, for example if you want your tires changed, you could say something like タイヤを交換して欲しいんですが or the ever-useful: ちょっと聞きたいことがあるんですが、（いいですか）. That's what you say when you have a question for someone.

Isn't the pattern normally XXXがぼく（のこと）を好き when oneself is the object of another's liking ? が is to emphasize that it is the thing which is appreciated or preferred (although that could be what you meant, too. )


Something like タイヤを取り替えて（変えて、交換して）ください。。（XXXてもらえますか？。。。）？I think is a safer way to request a change of tire.

What Charles suggested is more polite. As he wrote, If you say タイヤを取り替えて欲しいんですが、、、（欲しいのですが・いただきたいのですが）、what you are really saying is, " I am wondering if you could change the tire for me ", "Would it be OK if I asked you to change the tire for me? ", etc.

While it is perfectly fine to say タイヤを交換してください, I think it is better to take the indirect aproach than directly stating your request, which could easily be mistaken for a demand. It has a lot to do with HOW you say it, too.

My context was as the paying customer in line at a mechanic garage asking to have something repaired. I am without a doubt polite but don't ask if it's OK with them very hestitantly to fulfill a standard order.

In that situation I think （修理して、直して、取り替えて ）もらえますか or even ください are perfectly fine.

As I wrote in my post, they ARE perfectly fine. My point was that in Japan, even when they are the paying customers, people tend to prefer to present themselves with this air of..... "modesty" for the lack of a better word in my vocabulary. It might have something to do with our much talked about "need to keep the harmony", I don't know. lol What I gave as an explanation may sound a bit much to some but that is what sounds the most natural to our ears.

Again, もらえますか・ください are perfectly fine ( I would choose もらえますか over ください）. I just thought what Charles Barkley suggested sounded better / more natural.

Thank you ! This gives everyone several possibilities to build on next time they're addressing the 修理工 or making a more significant request than the standard/polite "Moraemasuka/Moraemasenka ?"

Especially 願いしたいんですけど・お願いしたいと思いますが、 I do use for making hotel reservations or asking a favor of a government official or things like that.


Anyway, to tomii's original question :
