飲み or 飲む (to drink)

I'm a little confused (what's new).

I've one source (a Kanji flash-card) that says to drink is 飲み and another (an on-line site) that says to drink is 飲む.

I've had a look in WWWJDIC (which I don't really understand very well how to use yet) and it says の.む -の.み drink; smoke; take : which seems to suggest either will do?

This is only the 3rd Kanji I've looked at so be patient.

飲む is 終止形(the conclusive form) or the dictionary form.
飲み is 連用形(the adverbial form) or the masu-form root.

It's same as other godan verbs.

That wasn't very nice of them to just use the kanji for くる in that chart. I'd be willing to be that there are scores of people going around thinking くます, くた, くない, etc. are correct forms.

Ah, exactly. It might be better to use kana(or furigana) for the irregular verb 来る.

飲む is the regular form of the verb, as if you arent doing anything with it in the sentence..

飲み is the mi form, which you can use with different grammar types, such as nomitai (i want to drink...) or nomimasu (im drinking) or nomimashita (i drank).

-if it was noun , and mean your purpose is drinking say :

喫茶店へコーヒーを飲みにいきたいでした。( I want to cafe for drinking coffee)

but 飲みむ it's dictionary form (jisho form )
and has different rules in past and present

If you want to say it in past tense, you have to conjugate the auxiliary verb たい, not です.
