I need help translating this sentence !

日本に, 四か月いました.

In Japan, I was inside four and the moon?

分からないよ....
 
"I was in Japan for four months."

Is ka the counter for months? That would make sense...
 
Well......～四ヶ月 is how it should be written I believe to say number of months. but pronounced よん か げつ 四ヶ月 三ヶ月 七ヶ月 やど。
 
As other posters mentioned, 月 means either the moon or the month. (Maybe something to do with lunar calendar.)
「ヶ月」 is used to count the duration of month as Damicci indiated.
e.g.
１ヶ月 = for one month
２ヶ月 = for two months

It can be used for age, too.

この赤ちゃんは４ヶ月です。
This baby is four months old.

If you want to emphasize the "duration", you can add 間
e.g.
１ヶ月間 = for one month
２ヶ月間 = for two months

BTW, ﾆ谷 is not incorrect when counting months. It's one of those rare "undecided" things left in Japanese.
 
The following are correct:
四ヶ月
四か月

The following are incorrect:
四ヵ月
四ケ月

The following is acceptable, but very strange:
四カ月
 
There are kanji that can be used, too, although this is not so common in modern usage.

I don't think I agree with you, Jimmy Seal. Granted it's been a long time since I formally this stuff, but I don't think it's incorrect to have ４ケ月 and the others you put. I do think, however, that they are not nearly so common, and yeah, a bit strange perhaps.

Personally, I always use ４ヶ月 except when I change it for stylistic purposes.
 
ヶ is not katakana; it's an abbreviation of 箇, and so it's small for a reason, so arbitrarily replacing it with ケ or ヵ makes no sense, though the misuse of these is so widespread that the IME happily offers them as options.

It's never technically wrong to use katakana in place of hiragana, and that's why 四カ月 is ok, but still very odd and it only occurs because of the influence of the above mistakes.

Perhaps your are right! Still, good luck trying to convince a native speaker that they're wrong when they do something like that!

I'm pretty sure that I've seen them all in actual usage, to be honest. Of course, on the other hand, if the 'wrong' usage becomes common enough it eventually becomes 'correct'. Such is the way of languages.

(I just hope--and I've seen this more times that I like to admit--that わ never replaces は as a particle. It seems rather vulgar to me for some reason...)
 
I've seen them all in actual use, too, sadly. But I've seen music store awnings that advertised "Bass's Guitar's Drum's Amp's" and God willing, that will never be considered correct English.

The particle は is universal enough that any time someone uses わ in place of it, it's either intentional, or a child or beginner non-native speaker. Hopefully.
