Hi,

1. そしたら横転したの手伝ってやっからよ。

a) When reading this sentence I stuck on the grammar around の. Is this structure unusual or am I just having a blank?

b) What is やっから?

2. 「ねえ、母さん。わかってもらえると思うが、それをやった人は法律の許す範囲でやっているんで。」

a) Does わかってもらえると思う literally mean "I think I can receive your understanding of this" (i.e. understanding of the fact that such a person would be acting within the law)?

b) Sorry if I have asked this question before, but what is the difference here between で at the end of the sentence and だ?

3. 「二人にやらせとけばいい」

Is やらせとけばいい = やらせて・おけば・いい?

I googled that sentecne, and the results shows that that's from the Japanese translation of an English joke.

This is obviously a mistranslation of "overturn". It should be translated as ひっくり返す or 元に戻す. 横転する is never used for "to overturn (the overturned truck back in position)". In the first place, the form must be 横転するの, not 横転したの, since the action is not done yet. So it's doubly wrong.

1) b)
That's a dialect of やるから.

2) a)
～てもらえる "I recieve your favor of ~" is almost a polite expression here; "I think you can understand this".

b)
問題はない, 法律違反ではない or like that is omitted at the end of the sentence.

3) Right.

So, in (1), would そしたらひっくり返すの手伝ってやっからよ be a correct sentence?

By the way, do you have any idea whether ハリー・ポッターと賢者の石 and ハリー・ポッターと秘密の部屋 are supposed to be at the same reading level? Obviously I'm not asking you to do any time-consuming research, I just wondered if you could find anything about this quickly through Google.

Yes, そしたらひっくり返すの手伝ってやっからよ is an appropriate translation.

Just from quich research, there doesn't seem to be an obvious difference in the level of difficulty between the two books.

Either I am still having a stupid moment, or this grammar is not familiar to me. Could you explain the purpose of の? To me it looks like ひっくり返す is a verb, and 手伝ってやる is also a verb, and I don't understand what it means for の to link two verbs.

Hmm, well, thanks for looking. I feel as if I am having a harder time with the second book than the first, which isn't exactly the direction I want to be going in.
