Hi,

1. 横浜では五時すぎ、東京・大手町の気象庁でも五時三十 分ごろ、雪となった。

Translation given: "Snowfall commenced in Yokohama slightly after 5:00, and the Meteorological Agency reports that snow began to fall in Otemachi, Tokyo, at approximately 5:30."

How does の気象庁 create the required meaning of "the Meteorological Agency reports that..."? To me it looks like it's saying that the Meteorological Agency is in Otemachi.

2. この雪で都内では転倒事故が相次ぎ、東京消防庁の調べだと午前零時までに 七人が骨折などのけがをした。

Translation given: "Within the city itself, falling accidents occurred at an unremitting pace. Tokyo Fire Department investigations report that, up until midnight last night, a total of seven persons have suffered injuries — including bone fractures — caused by slipping on the snow."

I understand this OK, except for だと. It seems as if it ought to mean something like "according to". Is that possible?

3. しかし、しろうとの悲しさ、医者が注射液を入れるのを 、ただ不安と祈りをもってながめ、覚悟をきめて腕を出 すほかはない。

Translation given: "Looking on with uneasiness and prayers, the hapless layman can only stretch out a courageous arm and receive the doctor's injection."

a) How does しろうとの悲しさ connect grammatically with the rest of the sentence? It seems to me as if the subject of the verbs at the end of the sentence ought to be しろう, but I don't see how that works with the intervening との悲しさ.

b) 医者が注射液を入れるの is marked as an object (を), but the object of which verb? Or is the verb implied and omitted?

4. そして、この確率を無視して絶対安全と(1)は言えないあ ニ(2)不安がる人を、ノイローゼだと(3)きめつける。

Translation given: "Those who [ignore] this fact, [and] worry over the absence of absolute safety, are branded by society as neurotic."

Can I check the functions of the と's here (especially the first two)?

1 - quoting
2 - when/if
3 - quoting

Is that correct?

1)
Yeah, の means so. It's translated freely.

2)
Yes. That's the copula だ + the conditional と.

と - goo辞書

3) a)
しろうと(=素人)/の/悲しさ
That's an adverbial phrase; しろうとの悲しさで.

b)
ながめる

4)
Those are all the quotation と.

Thank you.

2. Copula だ + conditional と is a combination that I thought I was familiar with, but I'm not sure how it means "according to". I thought Xだと (in this sense) meant "if (something is) X / if X is the case, then ..."

Does 東京消防庁の調べだと therefore literally mean something like "if it's the Fire Department's investigation (that we're reporting/quoting, and indeed it is) then (this is what it says....)"?

I also don't understand the use of conditional と in the dictionary example 「気象庁の発表による―、この夏は雨が少ないとのことだ」. How is there any conditional sense there? (Also, incidentally, is ― just a dash to introduce the quoted material that follows?)

3a. Sorry, I muddled up my question. I did of course mean that しろうと should be the subject, not しろう. I understand that it is しろうと・の・悲しさ. So, if I understand you correctly, しろうとの悲しさ means しろうとの悲しさで, and this means that the action described in the rest of the sentence is done in the circumstance of the patient's unhappy state. Is that correct? Is it the ~さ form that enables the phrase to be used adverbially? Or could we put some other arbitrary noun or noun phrase in that position and have it turn into an adverb?

Also, if しろうと is bound up in an adverbial phrase, then what is the subject of ながめ, きめて and 出す?

2)
As in the explanation in the dictionary I quoted, と shows the preceding clause is the condition/premise/basis of the topic of the following clause. There is no "if" or "when" in this と, so I should have used the term "conjunctive particle" instead.

3) a)
しろうと is not the subject. It's more likely a state of the subject; 患者は素人であるという悲しさで.

The adverbial sense of the phrase is nothing to do with さ. It's just the omission of the particle. Therefore it can be happened to other nouns.

The subject 我々患者 "we patients" is omitted in the sentence, since it's obvious.

Thanks, I see, yes I think there was just a misunderstanding there over the word "conditional".
