What is the difference between のかな and かな?

For example,

映画館に行くのかな ｖｓ 映画館に行くかな

Basically the same. "A volitional verb + かな" can mean "～しようかな", i.e., "I'm going to do" with a falling intonation, though.

Is the implication of a volitional verb + かな generally that strong ? I thought of the English approximation more as a suggestion to oneself, "I think I will..." with an implied sense of doubt.

Yes. "With a falling intonation" is the key.
e.g.
さ、ご飯も食べたし、もう一仕事するかな（＝ しようかな）。

No. That's one word ひとしごと.

Ah, OK. Those types of words can be confusing, because a lot of times they aren't in the dictionary, so it's hard to know how to read them, like 一通り or 二通り (which should be ひととおり and ふたとおり).

I've heard both, but のかな～ definitely sounds more like something a girl would say.
