「いせる」の翻訳

伸ばす vs. いせる (布,パターンのこと)
elongate vs. shorten?
stretch vs. stiffen?

I can't find いせる in any of my dictionaries. Is it the original word, or is it a form of some verb written いす?

I know 伸ばす can be translated as "elongate" or "stretch." Since this is pattern making, it could very well be either. I think it might be referring to how tight a gather is pulled. I guess I need to know how to translate いせる in order to know which version for 伸ばす would be better.

I also have these symbols to go by:
伸ばす印: a curved line with arrows pointing outward.
いせる印:a curved line with inverted arrows pointing inward...they look kind of like chicken feet at both ends of the line.

I'm just going to give you what I found in the dictionary (since it's all I can do, anyway). いせる is a verb that means to sew in a manner that gives a rise/swell to flat fabric, but is done in a very fine way so that it can't be seen on the surface. It's used in sleeves and the tips of tabi among other things. Hope that helps more than what you got in the 縦地 thread.

I had never heard of the verb いせる... but my online dictionary says what Glenn says. It says that the corresponding English verb is "Shirr".

Could it possibly be よせる? It's a verb that could mean to bring multiple points closer together, which is the opposite of 伸ばす.

I'd never heard いせる, too.
I came up with another one on a site for workers in fashion industry.

http://www.fashion-heart.com/term/sewing/jp-i.htm
いせる: Edging Contracting/Contraction

The translation in the site is not a verb, but might be some help for understanding the meaning. Further, the site says 伸ばす is a technical term in sewing, too.

Could it possibly be よせる?
Yeah. 広辞苑 says it might be from 寄せる or い(prefix) + 迫[せま]る "to close in."
