I've been searching for the meaning of 【たらしめる】for a while and I keep coming up with this form...

何何を何何たらしめる。。

I can't figure out what it means! What does this sentence mean?

アメリカをアメリカたらしめるドグマなき宗教。

According to the 大辞林, it means …としてあるようにする. I guess that means "to set/make something a certain way." I don't really understand the definition myself, and I've never seen たらしめる before that I can recall.

What is the subject of the sentence?

The subject would be...
American dream
The market economy
Hamburger
or else.
Probably the author use the word "宗教" with a negative connotation or, at least, as something inexplicable.

アメリカの90年代とはクリントンの八年間だった。人権と経済の両立、グローバリズムと国内の国際化と、良いことずくめの10年であったように見える。だが、この時期にアメリカをアメリカたらしめてきた二つの居場所『多様なものの共存』と『孤独を愛する文化』のどちらもが崩壊していった。

Did you want all of this translated ? I asked a friend about the first part

アメリカをアメリカたらしめるドグマなき宗教 and he translated more or less as Dogma-less religions that make America America (let America be America).

It seems indeed that the author is arguing that what made America America in the first place has collapsed, in this case the "coexistence of diverse people" (multi-cultural society?) and the "culture that loves solitude" (individualism?).

I had never heard of たらしめる either.
