「ごろ」 vs. 「とき」; 「いつ（頃）」

もう一度、お久しぶりですね。最近、忙しいんですよ。つかれました。しかし、もうすぐ夏休みです。二週間ぐらい、静養できますね。もちろん、勉強しなければならないと思います。でも、遊ぶのも大切ですね。お金がありませんから、旅行できません。これも大丈夫です。日本に住んでいるのが僕の旅行だと信じています。

とにかく、今日質問が二つあります。英語でタイプします・・・。

First, I'm curious about the differences in usage between 「ごろ」 and 「とき」 in instances like the following:

1. 子どものとき、僕は母に本を読んでもらいました。
2. 子どものごろ、僕は母に本を読んでもらいました。

These are both valid sentences, I believe, so what is the difference between them?

Also, regarding the following two sentences, what nuance does 「頃」 add to the first that the second lacks?

3. いつ頃つきますか。
4. いつつきますか。

Regarding 頃（ころ） and 時（とき）, the general idea is that "toki" is a simple pointer to time while "koro" refers to a general time frame.

1. 子どものとき、僕は母に本を読んでもらいました。
In this case, you are referring simply to the time when you were a child.
2. 子どものころ、僕は母に本を読んでもらいました。
This refers to a span of time, i.e., your childhood.

3. いつ頃つきますか。
Similarly, this asks the general time frame (that is, the approximate time). The question suggests the speaker is asking only for the approximate time and not any specific time.
4. いつつきますか。
This asks "when" only. But, because "koro" is not used, the question can be received more as a demand for the exact time of arrival. The nuance is picked from context of the situation.

こんにちわ 皆さん！

"Koro" and the nigori "goro" I also tend to confuse at times. Fortunately, though, there don't seem to be a lot of exceptions to the general rule that koro gets attached to eras or periods of a broader duration (学生のころ、日本にいたころ）、with the phonetic change for このごろ、and "goro" to time expressions (いつごろ、何時ごろ、そのごろ、など)。

でも、多分、ほとんどの日本人にとっては、間違っていた「ころ」と 聞こえたら、
「ごろ」として、自然に受け止めるのでしょうね。
