The in-laws are coming!

Ok...y'all need to be helping ease kirei's anxiety as the upcoming in-law visit approaches!

I will have very limited internet access while they're here, and I feel that might cause me to go insane.

Are you going to be taking them anywhere to see the local culture? It may be a good chance to see some museums or art galleries, the kinds of things we all kind of forget about when living in our own city, if you know what I mean.

That's what I did when, my wife came to see me in America last year. We had fun!

Kirei_Na_Me....sound slike you will be having fun! I remember meeting my wife's family for the first time! There was a slight language barrier, but all was fine! even the kids were excited to see a "Yankee" or "Unko-man" as they call me....hahaha.

The next year I went to meet them, her mother was there, and the kids started to learn some english. It was amazing. Her mother is great, no English, but just by the facial expression, and body motions, and my small vocab of Japanese we got along great and understood what was going on. Her sister-in-law is learning English quick. She quized me on my Japanese while at the wedding photoplace, and I taught her some English vocabulary. Me and her Brother are a bit closer now. His English is very limited, but I had a great time talking to him....

I think you should have nothing to worry about! They will have a great time visiting America, and you! Just remember, "hajimemashita" and "dozo yoroshiku"

I still think you'll have nothing to worry about. They will be nervous at first, I'm sure. If your husband helps relieve their nervousness and anxiety, things will go smoothly. Good luck. I'll be looking forward to your updates.

kirei, I'm sure you're having a lot of fun with your in-laws' visit. You should take bunch of pictures of them.

They are so lucky to have this opportunity to meet you and your boys.

It reminds me of the time my husband met my parents for the first time. My father was drunk and tried to use as many Engrish words he knew as possible like "papa" or "money", it was hilarious!

Well, as of right now, they are still stuck in Detroit. My husband has been in NC waiting on them since 12:30 pm, eastern time, and it's now 9:10 pm. Their original flight from Detroit to Greensboro was cancelled, so they had to wait for another one. I look for them at 1:00 am tonight? What a day!

Hope your coping well. They seem a nice crowd and language shouldn't be to much of a problem. When I went to my cousins her mother-in-law and my mother got on very well, despite the fact that the mother-in -law spoke very little English (She is Italian, Sciliy to be precise) and my mother speaks no Italian.

No, not a Star Wars t-shirt. It's a suggestive t-shirt, though. It says something like "get naked and lie with me" and then something like "I'll be your stripper" and other suggestive statements. Of course, she had no idea what it really said...

Anyway, my husband took them to DC today and won't come back until late tomorrow night. I get a little break! Yay! I mean, they are really nice people and I like them a lot, but it's good to get a little break!

Glad to hear that things are going as smoothly as some of us here have predicted and that you are coping well. When one fears the worst and it doesn't turn out as one thought, it can be a most memorable experience experience for all involved. I hope the mother-in-law is treating you well. Well, the in-laws just did leave for the airport not even 10 minutes ago. It was a good time. They were very nice, down-to-earth people, and I am so thankful that my mother-in-law loved me!

I will tell more later. I have too much stuff to do now. I will share some more pictures, though.

First one is my husband and his parents, second one is where my oldest son introduced his cousin to his girlfriend

, and the third one is all the J-family members.

Speaking of Louis Vuitton, let me tell you all about the shopping my sister-in-law did while she was here.

She bought SO much stuff, it wasn't even funny. First, she went to DC and bought Louis Vuitton wallets and a key holder, then she went to Chanel and bought just a wallet that was $600, then she went to Tiffany & Co. and bought a necklace, a ring, and a keyring(my mom-in-law bought me a necklace and husband bought me a keyring, so I can't complain too much). She then went to Charlotte, NC, and bought lots of Ralph Lauren and Tommy Hilfiger clothes(the Tommy I wouldn't give you 2 cents for), and then, shopping at other various places for other various things. Everything was "YASUI" here, compared to all that "TAKAI" stuff back home! She bought 20 L'Oreal mascaras and like 15 Revlon nail polishes to take back home. They spent a fortune on omiyage alone! My parents-in-law had to buy for 50 people, and my sister-in-law, for 30!

I wish I had that much money to burn...

the only time i've found a good price in japan is buying secondhand or in a convenience store
sopranos is the most expensive here, like $99
but even average dramas cost $200 + there
i saw inu no waltz for $90 in akihabara, i should have bought it!
but i just had to read reviews first
my mistake, and one i will most certainly make again

Sounds like you got on well with your in-laws. From the pictures they look like a nice family.

It doesn't surprise me that they bought a lot off stuff in the shops. When I was in the States I bought stuff that was expensive back here. In fact a lot of British people will go on weekenders to New York just for the cheaper goods. Like Japan the UK is an expensive country to live in.

My personal policy has always been never to pay more for a wallet than the average amount of cash that it will contain. This means I have always had astoundingly cheap wallets. Usually about 10 bucks, tops.

I envy you Kirei! I live in the same city as my fiancee's family (and as from next month they'll be my in-laws). We have to go there at least once a month for a family dinner. My future father-in-law is a nice guy, but he still likes to 'test' me with awkward questions from time to time. I guess he's just looking out for his little girl though. Amusingly enough (given the current thread) the first gift he ever bought me was a Versace wallet.

I've never quite understood the need to buy expensive designer stuff, but my fiancee used to be very much into it. She's the only nurse I've ever met who wears a $6,000 Rolex! She's calmed down a bit since we set up home together though.
