This hit the news during GW, but was addressed once again in a GSDF press conference on Tuesday:

Japan's Ground Self-Defence Force withdrew a newly introduced unit logo after criticism over what many described as an excessively militaristic design created using generative artificial intelligence. The logo belonged to the 4th Company of the 1st Infantry Regiment, part of the 1st Division based at Camp Nerima in Tokyo. It was posted to the regiment's official X account on 29 April but remained in use for only three days.

According to the GSDF, the image showed an elephant in camouflage carrying a rifle, with a human skull drawn on its chest. Blue flames appeared in the background, with another flame extending from one eye. The design quickly drew complaints online, with critics calling it warlike and inappropriate in tone. At a press conference on 19 May, GSDF Chief of Staff General Masayoshi Arai said the force would be more careful in future. He said the military wanted the public to maintain an appropriate understanding of its units and feel a sense of familiarity towards them.

Critical comments followed after the logo's posting. They included responses that it was more suited for an army intending to kill people and the entire design had a hostile tone. Others expressed concerns about copyright infringement because it closely resembled the one used by Thailand's border patrol police. According to GSDF officials, the new logo was created to replace the one that had been in use since 2002. A member used Chat GPT to generate it. They kept the elephant from the prior logo and added the keywords "anthropomorphism," "blue flame," "cool" and "SDF" in their prompt. The company commander approved the submitted result and the regiment commander allowed its use on the X account.

I swear the left can find something to complain about literally anything. "Awww, look at that cute puppy!" "What about that stray cat over there? You're not being very inclusive!"
