News Oscars 2024: Studio Ghibli and Godzilla franchise awarded

The 2024 Academy Awards, held in Los Angeles, were a momentous occasion for Japan. Two cultural giants from the country, Studio Ghibli and the venerable Godzilla franchise, received prestigious recognition from Hollywood's elite. Hayao Miyazaki's animated film "The Boy and the Heron" secured the Best Animated Feature Film award, while Takashi Yamazaki's monster film "Godzilla Minus One" triumphed in Best Visual Effects.


A recurring theme throughout the event was the profound impact of violent conflicts. Both "The Boy and the Heron" and "Godzilla Minus One", along with the winner of Best International Feature and Best Sound, titled "The Zone of Interest", and the night's ultimate victor, "Oppenheimer", explored the devastation of World War II from distinct perspectives. Notably, Studio Ghibli's "The Boy and the Heron" secured the Best Animated Feature Film award early in the evening, marking Hayao Miyazaki's second Oscar win. His first came in 2003 for "Spirited Away", and he had previously received Oscar nominations for "Howl's Moving Castle" (2006) and "The Wind Rises" (2014).

The latest Godzilla film won the Oscar for best visual effects at the 96th U.S. Academy Awards in Los Angeles on Sunday, a first for Japan in the category. Takashi Yamazaki's "Godzilla Minus One," set in postwar Japan, is the latest installment in the long-running franchise about a fire-breathing, city-stomping fictional monster. The film follows the story of a Japanese pilot burdened with guilt for surviving a kamikaze mission who joins forces with others to battle Godzilla, the giant reptilian monster that emerges in Tokyo. The city, already devastated by U.S. air raids during the war, faces another threat from the legendary creature. The Godzilla franchise is celebrating its 70th anniversary this year since the first film was released in 1954, inspired by the U.S. atomic bomb testing in Bikini Atoll.

The Japanese movie "Godzilla Minus One" has won the 2024 Academy Award for Best Visual Effects. This is the first time a Japanese movie has won an Oscar in the category. The film is the 30th Japan-made movie featuring Godzilla. It debuted in November last year, ahead of the 70th anniversary of the series' first film, released in 1954. In the latest work, the giant monster unleashes chaos in post-war Japan. Godzilla appears without warning and relentlessly destroys the city that is in the process of rebuilding. The monster and the people fighting it are depicted using VFX technology. The film has become a major hit in Japan, racking up box office revenues of more than 6 billion yen, or about 40 million dollars. It is also the highest grossing live-action Japanese film in US box office history.
