Seeking to cut plastic waste and adopt a more sustainable business model, Japanese confection seller Minamoto Kitchoan will turn rice crackers into edible spoons strong enough for thick Japanese sweets.

Made solely from domestically produced rice flour and sugar, the tiny new utensil contains no common allergens. Minamoto Kitchoan plans to include it with a rice-cake-and-sweet-bean snack from the spring. "If the spoon is made with too much water, it will become soft when used," CEO Kemmei Okada said. "We had a hard time finding a level of firmness where customers would still find the texture pleasant." Approximately 8 million yen ($58,000) was invested in special equipment for baking rice crackers for the spoons at a factory in the western Japanese city of Okayama, where the company was founded.
