Satomi Yoshizane

Utagawa Kunisada (歌川国貞, also Toyokuni III; 1786–1865), Satomi Yoshizane (里見義実) — from the series *Hakkenden: Inu no Sōshi no Uchi* (八犬傳 犬之草紙之内), Edo period, c. 1840s, colour woodblock print (nishiki-e).

The print portrays Satomi Yoshizane (里見義実, traditionally 1417–1488), remembered as the founder of the Awa Satomi clan (安房里見氏). This warrior house later ruled Awa Province on the Bōsō Peninsula. The image belongs to a series illustrating scenes inspired by Kyokutei Bakin’s (曲亭馬琴, 1767–1848) famous novel *Nansō Satomi Hakkenden* (南総里見八犬伝), which transformed the historical Satomi lineage into the legendary setting of the tale of the Eight Dog Warriors (八犬士).
