Utagawa Yoshitora (歌川芳虎, active c.1850–1880), Hatakeyama Shigetada (畠山重忠) — Edo period, mid-19th century, colour woodblock print (nishiki-e), Tokyo Metropolitan Library (東京都立図書館), H013-008. This warrior print depicts Hatakeyama Shigetada (1164–1205), a prominent gokenin (御家人) of the early Kamakura shogunate celebrated in medieval chronicles and war tales for his loyalty and martial virtue. Produced within the late Edo musha-e tradition popularised by the Utagawa school, Yoshitora presents Shigetada as an idealised heroic figure, reflecting nineteenth-century popular interest in the warriors of the Genpei War and the formative age of samurai rule. Such images blended historical memory with dramatic visual conventions, reinforcing Shigetada’s enduring reputation as the “model of the Bandō warrior” (坂東武士の鑑).
