Great Battle of Anigawa

Utagawa Kuniteru II (歌川国輝(二代, 1830–1874), "Picture of the Great Battle of Anigawa" (兄川大合戦之図), colour woodblock triptych, 1865. Although the print depicts the Battle of Anegawa (1570), both the title ("Anigawa" instead of "Anegawa") and several personal names were deliberately altered to circumvent late Edo-period censorship. Produced nearly three centuries after the event, the composition presents a dramatic, highly stylised vision of the fierce fighting between the allied forces of Azai Nagamasa and Asakura Yoshikage and the armies of Oda Nobunaga and Tokugawa Ieyasu, emphasising heroic combat rather than historical accuracy.
