Daizen-ji (大善寺), a temple of the Shingon sect (真言宗) in Kōshū, Yamanashi. The panel explains the final stand of Kondō Isami (近藤勇, 1834–1868), commander of the Shinsengumi (新選組), and links it to Daizen-ji (大善寺) and the Battle of Kashiozaka (柏尾坂の戦い). After the fall of the Tokugawa shogunate during the Boshin War (戊辰戦争, 1868–1869), Kondō and his remaining forces retreated westward from Edo. In March 1868, they reached the Kōshū region, where they regrouped and tried to stop imperial forces advancing for the new Meiji government. At Kashiozaka, near Daizen-ji, Kondō’s troops were defeated by better-armed opponents. The panel shows the fighting in a wooded area, with the temple’s sanmon in the background. After the defeat, Kondō fled but was soon captured and later executed in Edo, bringing the Shinsengumi’s role as a fighting force to an end. The display links Daizen-ji to this episode, placing it within the final stage of the Tokugawa regime and the shift to Meiji rule.
