The hotel that never was.

Today I started my new job in Ringwood (in Eastern Melbourne) as a Barista! For all you uncivilised types, thats a fancy word for coffee maker :P. I'll be working at a family owned Italian restaurant which is a nice change from my other job (cashier at Kmart).

From now on I'll be juggling two jobs in addition to my studies that start on the 14th this month....I sure hope I havent bitten off more than I can chew but we will soon see ^^; I need to save some serious dough before I can head to Japan hopefully next year.

Living in Melbourne's southeast I took the chance to travel along the newly opened Eastlink Freeway that connects the Eastern suburbs to the Southeastern suburbs (where I live) and offers another route to Dandenong and the Mornington Peninsula (the beach).
Instead of taking me half an hour to get from where I live to my new job, it took only 7 minutes! I was mightily impressed...although much has been said about the tolls that will come into force at the end of July (the freeway will be free to the public until then).

The strangest thing about this new freeway however...is the amount of money spent on artwork dotted along the freeway and the tunnel. Various sculptures, Coloured glass, fly nets (?) and a myriad of other sculptural oddities have been employed along the sides of the freeway in addition to landscaping the sides with grass and trees...which kinda make it seem like you are really driving in the country rather than the suburbs.

One of the oddest of these "attractions" is the "Hotel" sculpture that sits on the stretch of freeway to Dandenong. Theres no way to enter it because it is just a sculpture! It was baffling why they even built something like that!

Other sculptures include an odd "bird and worm"

and one that looks like some kind of massive antenna...maybe used to send a message to outer space?

Truly some weird stuff they are smoking at the Victorian government :S Maybe I just dont really appreciate this art...but whats really the point if most of the time your focus would (and should) be on the road? There was a funny article in the paper that said experts predict accidents would increase exponentially because these "artworks".

I dont know what do you think? Should freeways be "prettified" with artwork and landscaping? Or should have the money been better spent elsewhere?

Until next time

A Barista, eh? I remember going to a Stahbucks in Boston when they started to sell Green Tea Iced Frappuccino. I would REFUSE to order by their ridiculous "Tall-Grande-Venti" system and tell the Barista that I wanted a Large Green Tea Iced Frappuccino. He would point to the Largest cup they had on display on the counter and say, "Venti?". I would ask the kid if he spoke Italian and he'd say no. Then I'd tell him I didn't either and I wanted a LARGE GREEN TEA ICED FRAPPUCCINO! Sure, I COULD say Venti but it was a matter of principle.

K-Mart, on the other hand..... they don't bother with that kind of silly pretentiousness. I miss my K-Mart. I used to buy all my underwears and socks there. Of course, this being Boston, it was called K-MAHT. lol

ATTENTION, K-MART SHOPPERS! DON'T BE FOOLED BY THE BOY AT THE CHECK OUT LANE #2 WHO'S PRETENDING TO BE YOUR REGULAR DOWN-TO-EARTH K-MART EMPLOYEE. HE'S A BARISTA BY NIGHT!!!

About those sculptures, I do not care for the hotel and the birdy but I kind of like the one in the last picture... whatever it is.

lol the Starbucks in Australia have the small, regular and tall sizes I think. Then again the only time I really see starbucks is if I'm in the city...which is rare. I've never had any of their frappuccinos/flavour shots or whatever ;) I like my coffee relatively simple, Latte or flat white lol. The cafe I'm working at flat out refuses to use flavour shots in their coffee. They say coffee shouldnt be spoiled by other flavours.

I also heard you can buy guns at Kmart in America o.o;; I would be quite scared of handling that section >.>

I rather enjoy all three of the sculptures, but I've always thought that while expression is paramount in human society, money could be better used feeding starving children and keeping struggling families afloat. Unless it was all recycled metal or something. I love recycled structures.

My mate works at Starbucks. He just got chewed out for talking to the press about some Starbucks stores closing... Apparently he didn't know it was against company policy. Definitely their bad, not his.

Also, yes, there are gun stores in some K-Marts. I own a 12 guage Mossberg shotgun I bought at a K-Mart for a little over 200 dollars. One of the only reasons I like America. I'm a firearms enthusiast.

Thats also true...but I just feel it seems kind of pointless on a freeway when everyone is trying to get from A to B in the shortest time possible...maybe it will soften the blow when people are caught in bottlenecks or something lol.

Yeah at Kmart they specifically tell employees to never talk to the media and just direct them to the manager haha.

Ahh I guess firearms is good if you like them...It is difficult to own a firearm in Australia. There are very stringent tests required for the licence and it needs to be renewed yearly. I think after the Port Arthur massacre in 1996 here they banned all semi-automatic handguns. They are only allowed for Police.
