Hi guys,
In a text book I'm reading it has a section at the bottom of each page called
体験につなげるヒント
It is explained as
おうちのかた からお子さまへのことばかけのヒントや体験のためのアドバイスを紹介しています 。

What is a ことばかけ❓

The title says....
Tips to tying to personal experience.

It's a noun form of 言葉をかける, i.e., "speaking to children" in your case.
examples of the same way of nominalization
水浴び = 水を浴びること bathing
答え合わせ = 答えを合わせること checking answers
肝試し = 肝を試すこと test of courage

I never thought about this before but there a lot of words like this.
水遊び 犬かき 油揚げ など
Can you make up your own or are they all pretty much fixed words?
For example テレビ見 日本酒飲み 寿司食い are acceptable?

Thanks toritoribesan,
Those other 3 words must be more common because they are listed in my dictionary. ことばかけ is not however. I see above that mdchachi has asked an interesting question I look forward to any replies.

You are right. It's not a common word. I'm a native speaker of Japanese but I'm not even sure if it should be ことばかけ or ことばがけ.

Basically fixed, though we have some freedom.
テレビ見 is clearly unacceptable, the rest may be accepted in some contexts but I don't remember having heard them.

In my home I use my own made-up word ケツ拭き (けつぶき) for "toilet paper" (direct translation of "aśświpe", of course).
In Australia, ******* is a derogatory term used similarly to ばか but maybe a little harsher.
It gave me a chuckle.

Judging from examples above or other ones in a corpus, 言葉かけ seems to be used often in the field of education or nursing. 言葉がけ is also used, but the number of examples is fewer than 言葉かけ. These terms would be less common than 声掛け, but the meaning is easily understandable. Similarly, even テレビ見 would be acceptable in a specific context, in other words, this type of nominalization would be used only when it's understandable.
e.g.
「今何やってるの?」
「テレビ見中(てれびみちゅう)」(=テレビ見てる)
(as a dialect among their group)

「ビールと焼酎があればいいかな?」
「あいつは日本酒飲みだから酒も買っとこうよ」

As for the nuance of けつぶき, probably the difference is from the exceptionality of the reading. Since けつふき is commonly used, けつぶき sounds to have an unusual meaning as a result. For instance, てふき(=手拭き)is usually only used as "towel", so てぶき sounds like "wiping something with hands", similarly, while みずぶき(=水拭き) means "wiping something with a wet mop/cloth", みずふき might refer to an action "wiping off water with a dry cloth".

There is a difference in accent patterns too (depending on dialects)
てふき' vs みずぶき
けつ'ふき vs けつぶき
the same applies for
さかな'とり vs てどり, etc.

If the word is practical enough to be used generally, it would be fixed as a new common word just like チラ見 or 二度見.
