The history proved itself that everytine China became a major power, it would conquer neighbour countries. We never see it in a divided china (Tan, Song dynasties, warlord era) but united China (Yuan, Ming, Quing dynasties).

It is being forecasted that in 2016 China will surpass USA in terms of economy and sooner or later it will surpass USA in military spending too.

Is a limited war inevitable between China and Japan in next 10 years? Would Japan start building up their navy and once again would they become a naval power to protect the country? Should they build up their nuclear weapons?

Why only China? Japan was the same. Britain was the same. America the same. Spain the same. In fact, I would say that China has been a major power for a while now and aside from Tibet and having the Vietnamese handing them their @$$es, China has been pretty tame with regards to external affairs.

America's military spending is insane by any measure. No I don't think China is going to come close without a RADICAL change that seems not only unlikely but maybe not even possible. Have you any idea how out of control America's military spending is?

Japan IS a significant naval power already.

I think this is not enough time for the Chinese to catch up in terms of naval power, so I would say no. The Chinese would be nuts to try and engage the Japanese navy, even alone. But this would bring in the U.S. navy and China would be like an ant to a cat.

Should they build up their nuclear weapons?

Absolutely NO. The arms race is already bad enough.

Anyway for the Topic, Japan should be ready for any risk, Sadly Japan has three freakin big enemies...But i'm against Nuclear weapons.

Your article is about between Vietnam and China, When you mentioned those dynasties. But why give a tittle like China and Japan. Maybe there would be small battles of Diaoyu Islands, but there's noway for Chinese to attact Japanese first. Never did and never will.

To Vietnam, maybe you have thought your country too much. Chinese and Vietnam are neighbours for 2000 yrs. Almost everytime you were invaded by other countries, Chinese always sent army and help to Vietnam. But i donot know why the only thing you remember is how Chinese treated you bad.

China have 30+ provinces now. If you search history carefully, you may see all of them were invaded by each other. But as Chinese, now we see our country as unified. Maybe you can say that's a brainwash stuff. I never see myself is ruled by some other nations' ppl. Every Chinese are equal to eachother.
Everytime I see a Vietnam, I only consider them as some south Chinese, like round eyes, short and yellow skin while say something similar with Mandarin but hard to understand.

By the way, some of wars between China and Vietnam, were local kindoms behavior, like Nanyue kindom, which were independent from Centre government of China. But Nanyue's descendants, Cantonese, are Chinese now.
There is one thing can be sure, if Chinese Emperor really want to invade you in history, I do not think there could be a contry called Vietnam, could still exist in the world.

Tell me, did your history teacher told you how many Chineses invaders did my ancestors killed? I really enjoy that part of the history. I even enjoy more when the Mongols, the Japanese invaded your China and wreak havoc on your cities and towns. How many Chineses did they slaughter? I want to know...

Actually, I remembered your mention of East Turkistan elsewhere, but I am still far too ignorant on the subject to comment (and may make a blunder opening my mouth anyway!). I believe they were threatened into submission in the late 1940s? Scummy action by China to be sure, but still, mild compared to so much that other countries have done and that needs to be said.

Blocking bids for independence is also a scummy action by China. I often compare that to a man not allowing his wife to leave him. Who would support that? Yet people support a country not allowing clear ethnic and geo-political groups to have independence? What nonsense! (Yes, I think that the American Confederacy should have been allowed to cede the Union as well and for the same reasons!)

China is in the same position with regards to Japan as in ages past; not enough boats. Even 1.5 billion, highly motivated people, could not swim here!

The nukes are checked by America's nukes. China would be crazy to use those.

And believe me, I knew all along the Taliban would not be pushed over so easily. From the start I called this Vietnam round two, and that was a primary reason. But as for China and Japan, I don't think China can compete on the sea...yet.

Japan surely does need to make more friends...but hard to do without losing some of America's good will... a tough spot.

Please guys, bury the past. Neither of you have any business trying to bear any pride of it nor trying to foist shame on the other. Those people are dead and buried and nothing to do with you. Neither of you were alive then. Just enjoy the history for what it is. That is what I do with the butt kicking America took in Vietnam. I laugh at how stupid it was to get involved...I can...because its nothing to do with me. I was just born in America. Nobody asked my opinion then...or now.

And nobody in your governments' or militaries' are going to ask your opinions on what they do next...I promise you that. Conclusion: screw your governments and mine too. They would happily throw our lives away and our families too...over nothing. So let us be friends, as we are just fellow humans with no political power.

Dynasty of Yuan, found by Mongolians. They conquered Chinese first, then they begin to attact countries of southeast nations. Later these mongolians called themselves Yuan. And they became Chinese later on.
Dynasty of Qing, found by Munchu, a ethnic nation origin from Northeast Asia. They conquered Chinese first, then they warned the nation around who tributed to Chinese not to find trouble with Qing dynasty. The Qing Emperor ask other nations keep on tributing to them. Vietnam was one of these nations. Qing attacted Vietnam because they thought Vietnam was helping Chinese army.
And in 1883, Qing help Vietnam defeat French.
Dynasty of MIng, as I mentioned before, gave out a list of "Chinese will never invade " countries. Vietnam was one of the 14 countries. By this list, the emperor said he will keep peace with Vietnam ever.

These are 3 dynasties you mentioned Chinese bully you, I hope you can understand this.

at the time of MIng dynasty. There were rebellions happened in China. The king of Vietnam began to advance into Chinese's territory(Guangxi today). After rebellions stopped, MIng emperor sent army into Vietnam and conquered it, made it into a province of China.

I can understand when China were departed, the whole asian countries wanted to get something from this. And if some nation succeeded, they could directly became the emperor of whole asia. I donot ask u to forgive what Chinese done later on. But I hope you can at least know what was the truth why these happened.
