Great news, but will they really get it?

Although they made it to the last 3, how much effect will last years earthquake have on the final decision?

QUEBEC CITY - Tokyo, Madrid and Istanbul have made the short list of cities bidding to host the 2020 Summer Olympics, the IOC said Wednesday. Two applicant cities -- Azerbaijan's Baku and Qatar's Doha -- failed to make the list.
The three candidate cities must now prepare a detailed description of their plans to host the Olympics and also face a visit from the IOC Evaluation Commission.
After that, the commission will publish a report on their assessment of Tokyo, Madrid and Istanbul as potential hosts. The election of the 2020 host city will take place at the 125th IOC Session in Buenos Aires on Sept. 7, 2013.

Not to spoil the party, but from the bottom of my heart I do hope they will make it! Madrid or Istanbul, that is. Even Baku is fine...

I'm too busy to dig up more evidence, but no city or country has ever benefitted from holding the olympics. The prime example were the Olympic games in Athens in 2004 which left the country practically covered in debt. The abominable results of the Summer Olympics in Tokyo 1964 are still visible after almost fifty years: concrete, concrete, concrete, destruction of old urban structure, hideous flyovers all over Tokyo (look at the Kandagawa, Nihonbashi, etc.), defacing and cutting through old neighbourhoods... and on top of all those architectural sacrileges will the jam-packed city be even more crowded, with commodity prices artificially inflating.

If Tokyo Metropolitan want to burn tax money, I'd rather have the great Ishihara buy the Senkaku Islands and install an entertainment park there.

It will be interesting if they make it in Tokyo
but for me l will be happy if they make it in Istanbul because Istanbul is the nearest to me and I can go to Istanbul by car ، the distance between my city and the Turkish boarder is 30 km only

Could you explain us why you don't want it to be in Tokyo? Wouldn't be great for the city and for Japan?

Mainly because driving to and through Tokyo constitutes a large part of my workday. I don't need the extra hassle.

It would end up being the "Tokyo" Olympics about like "Tokyo" Disneyland or the "Tokyo" airport at Narita anyway.

I think Turkey has never hosted Olympic Games. Japan had hosted Tokyo Olympic a long time ago as well as Wniter Olympics in Sapporo and Nagano.
Japan better support Turkey for nomination of 2020 Summer Olympic Game.

Istanbul seems most appropriate. It connects East and West. Madrid has no chance given its current economy. Tokyo has hosted once before.
