Hi. I owe a Japanese chap two beers of Guinness. He lives in Yokosuka, Kanagawa.
If I sent money so he could buy the Guinness from a shop, how much should I send to cover the cost of two cans?
Thanks a lot Rich

Price may not vary between places, not sure. But, if in the next few days, someone living around Yokusuka area can pop in a shop and find out price of two cans on Guinness, that would be much appreciated. Thing is, I could ask the chap himself, but if it's really expensive I might want to pass, and that would be embarrassing. :c) I just want to get some indication in what I'm taking on. (Funds low here). Thanks. Rich

P.S. Had snow here today. Now melting.

Man, if you are willing to send the guy money for the guiness you owe him, then it must be a good enough reason to stop being a cheap *** (sorry to swear, i mean it in a friendly context).

If you buy guiness in a bar/pub, which is the normal place you buy someone a beer when you owe them a beer, it's about ¥1,000 per beer (im rounding up, but guiness is expensive).

It would be much nicer though, to buy it for him the next time you see the guy. Because not only do you buy the person you owe a beer a beer in a pub, but you drink one with him too!

And if you aren't going to Japan, maybe it would be better to send him a limited edition Guinness from the UK.

So, are we saying two cans of Guinness bought in Japan would be 1000 YEN?

That's about 7.50 GBP then. Rich

I could send from UK, but I fear the costs of sending it. Thought it might be "more efficient" having the guy in Japan buy from the money I sent.

ahhhh, you are not in japan. (i guess i should have figured that from your flag, just figured that out now)

yeah, if you are just buying him a couple of cans, 1000yen should cover it - at most, one guiness shouldn't be more than 400yen.

the trouble is finding them. they aren't everywhere...

anyway, why do you owe this guy a couple cans of guiness? (if i may be so bold as to ask)

There's an Irish pub called "The Morrigans" in Yokosuka, and of course Guiness is available there.
1 pint of Guiness is JPY850. Same for 1 pint Kilkenny.

5 min. walk from either Shioiri Sta. or Yokosuka Chuuo Sta. (Keihin Kyuko line).

A tin of Guiness (330ml) is available something around JPY300 on internet shopping mall (such as Rakuten) and I'm sure there are several off-licenses handling imported beer including Guiness in Yokosuka as a US base is there.

Thats a good idea - just order the beer from a Japanese site, and then you don't have to ship them all the way from Europe

If the guy still lives in Yokosuka (I'm hoping so) it would be nice to tell him to go to Morrigan's Irish pub, ask at the bar, and there will be waiting for him two cans of Guinness.

But, how could I arrange that with Morrigans. I don't speak Japanese.

If anyone could arrange for that, that would be great. :c)

The guy in question sent me a circuit diagram. That was 11 years ago! :c) It's been niggling me all that time that I never rewarded him for his assistance. He mentioned two cans of Guinness when I asked him what I owed him. He thinks I've forgotten. It will be a surprise when I say there are two cans waiting for him down at Morrigans.

It's usually $4-$4.50 for a pint of Guiness in most restaurants/bars in NJ, but I think I paid like $8 for a pint in Manhattan this weekend. Well, it was better than anything else they had on tap...

Great....now we just need to find out the Manhattan/Yokosuka exchange rate and everything will be just ducky.

Hehe, that would be awesome if you could arrange the two beers to be prepaid for him.

Good luck with that - you might have to trust them with your visa details to arrange that though😲
