Spending nights in tents in Japan during bicycle travel

We are going to travel on bikes along Hokkaido next summer. The question is - can you set up your tent at nature if it is not a private territory, not a national park, if you do not make fire and leave garbage around?
Any problems with Police on that?

When you camp any place other than a campground, the police come over immediately.
Because there are a lot of free campgrounds in Hokkaido , don't worry.
If you talk about a route to tour Hokkaido, I show the campground close to the course.

Camping "wild" is very common, even in an urban area. Just be discrete and stay out of sight, and don't set up your tent till after it gets dark, or starts to. If hassled, it's easy to say that you were trying for a campground but got lost, had a flat, ran out of time/daylight, etc.

Try posting your question on a cycling forum such as Japan Cycling Navigator, or Tokyo Cycling Club.
