here is some important news to people who applied to a University part of Global 30 Program (like me)

Japan Opts to 'Restructure' Key University Internationalization Project

November 19, 2010, 12:24 pm

Japan is preparing to ax the Global 30 program, a cornerstone of its strategy to internationalize higher education. The government's Budget Review Committee, which is trying to slash costs in a bid to trim the country's runaway public debt, voted this week to abolish and "restructure" the project. Started last year with a budget of roughly $38-million, the project envisioned supporting a group of "core" universities to "dramatically" increase the number of international students in Japan and Japanese students studying abroad, according to the Ministry of Education. However, the program has gotten off to a slow start. The ministry's strict selection process meant that just 13 elite universities made the initial grade. And government cuts have already shaved up to 30 percent from the budget allocated to each institution for the program. The decision has been greeted with dismay by administrators and academics. "This government is destroying Japan," said Go Yoshida, a professor with the Office of International Strategic Planning at Nagoya University, which is one of the 13 selected universities.

Wow! Thanks for the information.

This is actually a very significant development for me, as my research proposal was directed related to Global 30 policy.

Suddenly, my chances are not lookin so good...

yeah ykk, I have the same query as MEXT_2011. Actually I dun know anything abt the Global 30 Program. And the article mentioned that "just 13 elite universities made the initial grade". May I know where is the list of the 13 universities?

In 2009, the following 13 universities were selected as global centers:
Tohoku University, University of Tsukuba, The University of Tokyo, Nagoya University, Kyoto University, Osaka University, Kyushu University, Keio University, Sophia University, Meiji University, Waseda University, Doshisha University, and Ritsumeikan University

Sorry to hear about your research project, benhlandau. I hope everything turns out ok.

does this mean that anyone of us who apply for these 13 universities will be affected? How abt those uni that are not in the list?

According to what I read in MEXT website, the goal of those 13 universities is to create a friendly environment for international students by conducting some courses in English, providing dorms, etc.

So IMHO the cut in global 30 program does not affect applicant of other universities directly. But the cut in overall MEXT budget is the one affecting us.

EDIT: Actually I have no idea as well, my bad :(

I have navigated MEXT website for the Global 30 program and I undestood the goals of this program. Also the 13 universities selected are responsible for establishing good environment for this program.

What still vague for me is the relation between the (Monbukagakusho:MEXT research student scholarships) and the Global 30 Program. Are these separate entities, or the (Monbukagakusho:MEXT research student scholarships) are part of the Global 30 Program ???

I suspect that the scholarship program and the Global 30 programs are not linked so tightly. I don't think the restructuring will mean elimination either as the article seems to indicate that it wasn't effective at bringing students across. Japan wants to internationalise their universities, so I don't think we are at too much risk.

oh!please can anyone tell me if we choose a university that is not among those 13 or 30,do they accept our choice? for instance:KOBE CITY UNIVERSITY OF FOREIGN STUDIES,CHUBU UNIVERSITY,UNIVERSITY OF SHIZUOKA :?:(
ohh!none of these 13 universities provide my field !😲
