MEXT Scholarship for Postgraduate 2011: General Discussions.

Embassies e-mailed us with information about significant decrease, but this pdf sais about "only" 11 percent reduce. I don't have any idea what's going on.

The scholarship population has inflows as well as outflows, eg. The 2008/2009 scholarship students finish their courses as we join.

If there were x% more scholarships awarded in 2009 than in 2010, then our reduction 2010 -> 2011 will be about* (11-x)%.

Conversely though, if there were x% less scholarships awarded in 2009, than in 2010, the our reductions will be about* (11+x)%.

*Estimates because scholarship durations can vary.

I talked to my professor and he explained that the largest reduction this year were in the scholarship's extensions (for both undergraduate to master's; masters to PhD) which was 50%. ☝
Soon, these 11% reduction, you should consider the people who are ending (and thus return home) and among those trying to get the scolarship extensios, that this year will be 50% less.

So, the reduction of 11% won't be fully passed on to new applications, and we still have to consider that Monbusho is not a program just for foreigners, it also provides scholarships for indicated students of universities, which must also suffer some reduction, in addition there is then undergraduates, technical and teacher training programs scholarships of Mobusho.

So, should we worry about it? Yes! Because we never hears about a cut so dramatic!! But we shouldn't make it larger and start to going nuts with it

Hi karinkitoka, in my country, Mext says that applicants will learn Japanese about 6 months and all courses are taught by Japanese.

But I was wondering, didn't you submit the letter of acceptance from you university/professor? I thought that letter meant that you passed the screening of the university...

Anyway, the other day I was talking to a member of this forum and we found some differences about the way we are going to recieve "the call"
I was expecting that the embassy would inform me if MEXT finally grants me the scholarships but he told me that his professor was going to make the final annoucement.

How is the procedure in your country?:?

The final annoucement will be made by the embassy, but the news are received a little early in the university, so your professor will be able to tell you something some weeks before your embassy.

And in some universities, LoAs are given, but not necessarily grants your entrance in university, just an expectation of be accepted. I think our uni are a little be different, but I know that this works for Todai and Nagoya University, for example.

Same goes for anyone who used MEXT for Japanese Studies or Undergraduate or any of the other ones. If you've already been here on a government scholarship, finished the program, and gone home, you can't get another one unless you've taught/researched for 3 years, etc.

so if a person chose to go back to his country upon the completion of his programme, he couldnt continue the scholarship even with a different one?

I think what akaitsume means is in the case you go to japan, come back to your country and then apply again. Por example: undergraduate -> come back, 3 years later -> Research student

The extention of the scholarship can be granted when you are *still* in Japan lets say from master -> PhD
(with all this budget reductions it might be difficult as some people mentioned before)

i realised it later, and so i changed the question.
a little misunderstanding
but is it only about the scholarship provided by MEXT? will they block another scholarship granted by the other institution? (in the case of those who have returned from japan)

Although he stated that the company has virtually "reserved a seat for me" (which I'll be formally informed about by the end of December), he stated clearly that there's a possibility of being dropped from the scholarship according to the budget cuts to be decided in early January by the government.
So it is the final result announced by the end of January that is going to be the decisive one...

I only heard about December announcements in this forum only. In my country the results come out in February and not a single month earlier.
Also, I'm surprised some of you talk about your professors as if they're your best friends or classmates. Mine are definitely not going to mail me about anything, they probably forgot they gave me LoAs. It took a month and a half for one of them to just sign the LoA, and another one asked me to inform him when I get the final results.

I'm always hearing about the seriousness of Japanese professors, but in my case, he is so, how can I say, approachable. I think it's because him is Spanish and complete his master and PhD in Japan with Monbusho, and now, teaches in university. (ﾂ?拈ﾂ??)

Is just a little hard to find him in his computer, due our time difference, but the next time I talk with him, I'll try to ask all this last questions in forum and I'll paste the answers here, for you.☝

I had constant contact with my Japanese professor, and his kindness is far more than I could initially expected. I'm literaturally moved by his kindness, useful help and others, which I could seldom find among local professors.
