The way I see it, you`re more than qualified for a research scholarship. You can`t go for an undergrad if you already finished college...Besides, your bachelor`s degree will be recognized in Japan, so don`t worry about that. A research student scholarship is the best way to get initiated in japanese culture, language and school especialy if you`re not proficient in japanese. And after those 2 years (or 1, depends on your teacher and project) you are expected to move on to master`s course so as to continue your studies in Japan. To become a research recipient you have to have a project and pass some tests. Check your local Japanese embassy or their site, you`ll find there plenty of info. The project has to be structured in a plan on a couple of pages (skim this and past year`s threads on how to do one). You can skip this research stage if you decide to have a master`s course in english, then you won`t need proficient japanese. I'm a bit confused about the research scholarship. I guess it's different from a phD, since it usually comes AFTER a master (at least in Italy). What is it exactly? I'm going to spend 2 years on the project I will present, and then move on to a master?

I'll search here and on my embassy site for info! I'm so excited :)
 
I went to my embassy site and it only talks about a generic "scholarship", which I guess will be the Monbusho.
The deadline for submissions is on April 2011, and it says so: "to-be-soon-graduated can apply, given they can get their degree by March or September 2012". Since I don't know if I can graduate by September 2012 (I'm supposed to, but you never know, if I get the MEXT and than fail an exam right before graduating, delaying my graduation to october or november, I could seriously try suicide -.-).
So I was thinking of applying next year, for March 2013. That would give much more time, and hopefully more chances to pass.
For now, I'll get better at English, study Japanese as hard as I can and get the best grades ever at my Uni :D
What do you think? Sounds like a good idea?

Actually, research student scholarship is Master / PhD scholarship, with research student period before actually becoming Master / PhD student. The research student period itself serve as a time for the grantee to be accustomed to the culture and living conditon in Japan. There is also an intensive Japanese Language Course which can be taken by scholarship grantee during Research Student Period.
You can skip Research student period if you already got accepted in the university. Of course to get accepted you need to pass the entrance examination and maybe interview.
As far as I know, you don't have to spend all 2 years of research student period before converting to master or phd. Usually the research you do during research student is carried on as your master / phD thesis. CMIIW.

yup, this year's application is for departure in 2011, 2011 application for 2012 and so on.

I'm new at this forum, to be honest I've never written in any forum on internet, so I apologize if I do something wrong, but I'm desperate, and if someone can help me I would really appreciate it.
The problem is that I've already been selected for a Monbukagakusho research student scholarship, already get my letter of acceptance from Keyo University, and I was just waiting for the final approval of MEXT, that would have been coming on December or January.
Few days ago I called the embassy for technical information, and they told me that for a unespected financial cuts my selection could be probably rejected. Officially for Italy there were 9 official places, plus 2 reserve, but now they tell me that because of the reduction of budget it passed to 8, and seen I was the 9th I've been practically fired.
Now, I read on this forum about MEXT budget reduction, and so for number of scholarships, and that the final decision is taken just by MEXT, but can they do that, this way?
They told that nobody before has ben rejected once he gets the embassy final (not just preliminary!) selection, and that the final approval by MEXT is just a formality.
I know that, by now, I can do nothing than waiting, but I had already invested a lot of money, time and hope in this, and now, after I passed all the tests they asked me to do, they say me "hi, we are sorry, but we didn't realize that we have not enough money, so… thane it easy ok?, you can try another time…" at few months before leaving?
And another doubt is: but the budget for 2011 scholarship, wasn't it decided the year before, so how can they actually tell me that they have no money? Didn't they allocate the budget for 2011 scholarship (I mean those who are selected in 2010 to start they scholarship in 2011) in 2010, so how can they they realize just now they have no money?
Did anyone had a similar problem? Any help would be greatfull

Yes, it is true - the budget was cut and it was sudden, after the embassy selection started. It's terrible, but that's how it is.
Of course, we will not abandon hope till the end, but the forecast is clear - some of those who passed the embassy screening will not go to Japan.

I was told by an employee in the Japanese Embassy in Iraq at the time of application that initially they will select 3 Iraqi nationals, and only two of those will make it to Japan 😲
 
Simone, that's very bad news. I'm Italian too, and I'm planning to apply for the 2012 MEXT. Do you know how many people usually apply here in Italy? 8 places are very few..
 
My son, A US ciizen, was a post-doctorate research fellow at the University of Nagoya a few years back. My impression from his was that he was window dressing. He relayed to me that he was kept away from the cool toys he would have loved to play with because the "people with the keys to the car" were pretty territorial.
 
Well I don't know what to think about Croatia, as far as i know Croatia had right to chose just 1 person to go to Japan, will they now stop everything? completely? i don't know, i am not applying through embassy and i don't have an info, but i'm pretty scared anyway, because i think my chances to go through university recommendation (if i would get it) are maybe reduced too...

and one more thing, i wouldn't say MEXT is just formality, i think MEXT holds the destiny, it's not just formality, i would say that tests at the embassies and all that ARE formality...
 
Well, after the embassies got the news about the budget reduction they could at least inform the candidates who passed the first screening that due to budget reduction some of them will not be in Japan next year. In Serbia, last year 4 people got the scholarship and now with the reduction issue I am not sure if 3 or 2 candidates will get the scholarship.

This is my first post here.
I'm brazilian and I passed in the preliminary tests in my Embassy.
Also I obtained a LoA of my dream's university: Kagoshima University, to get my doctor course in Fisheries Science.
But now, reading the bad bad news about the budget, I'm freaking out. Are you sure guys about these cuts? Is it valid for our selection? Or just for the selection that will happens in 2011?

I really want to know it, like all here in the forum, Study in Japan is my dream, cause there is the best place in the world to stay close to my beloved fishes 😍
I'll call to my embassy tomorrow and try to get some information that I'll share with you.

Well, I had a call from my embassy today. Not very good news, I was confirmed about the budget reduction too. Yet we still have to wait until december.

I spent most of the day very sad and frightened because as you may have already know this scholarship means the world for me (for most of us!!!) I have been fighting very hard to win my place between the candidates, waited, prayed, worked, studied, knocked every door I could. I am not giving up! I AM NOT GIVING UP!!!

POSITIVE THINKING, PEOPLE!!!

I understand your frustration about the budget cut. We all invest money, time, even job opportunity in order to get the chance to study in Japan. But the fact is we can do nothing about it when the budget is cut and candidate numbers are reduced. Stressful, and we can only pray to be lucky @@

Ytd my embassy suddenly called and asked me to submit a letter of recommendation from my boss by this Friday, which they claimed it is not necessary when I submitted other documents. The BEST thing is this Wednesday is a public holiday in Singapore and Malaysia, and for the letter to reach Embassy at least need to take one whole day. I don't know whether my letter will reach the Embassy on time or not, and now due to the budget cut, maybe one day delay will make me lose the chance, haiz

I'm trying to be most positive that I can, but the fact is that since I've noticed about the cuts my life is upsidedown.
I didn't sleep this night, and I'm waiting for 9 AM to call my embassy (Here in Brazil still is 6 PM). :(
But everything will be fine, I'm praying so hard too. And I'll request my cow meat when we arrive in Japan! So!! Don't forget your promise!!! rsrsrs.:p

I just called my consulate and that is what the lady told me:

:57:"Every year we suffered cuts, I heard about the cut this year, and is somewhat more severe than previous ones, but try not to worry, after all, yours and our part were made, and we're hoping that everything goes well.
But, something about this particular consulate has not yet been notified.":57:

So, I hope that definitely everything goes well. For all of us.

My name is Vladimir, I come from Serbia, my major is architecture, and like most of you guys I am waiting for the final results for MEXT scholarship, too.
As you can also say from my username, this waiting is killing me, literally ﾆ歎
I have just found recently this thread and this site and I find it extremely helpful.
when I called embassy last week (before I read this thread and found out that the results are not coming until february) they told me nothing more then there is still no results. As a matter of fact I think they wouldn't tell me even if they knew that there will be some reductions in number of candidates. But if they decrease the numbers, it would be from 4 to 3 candidates and that makes 25%, not just one person, and that is more than two times more of 11% of budget decrease announcements.
two years ago there was 5 people going, last year 4, wouldn't it be great if that trend just stop, for a little. but we can't think negatively just because of the oppressing numbers.
So I wish you all good luck! will be in Japan (eventually)

no, no, no you got me wrong, I didn't get those info from my embassy that is just what I assume based on a fact that last year just 4 people got scholarship. so I said "if they decrease the number it would be"
as a matter of fact I don't know how many candidates do we have now. maybe even 5 this year. but how comes that you have more than twice candidates then we have, and you are even more developed country (Bulgaria is in EU after all), and then Croatia has only one spot.
brate, it is a conspiracy, that's what it is!!!
:D just kidding of course, I would personaly like if Bulgaria had 50 spots if I get it hehehe

and in our embassy they tell you nothing. just that they don't have any new info. And of course that they will call us if they get it.
 
My consulate also doesn't provide this kind of information and it is quite difficult to know how many Brazilians are sent each year, since here the selection is done by region and there are about six regions with different consulates, each with a different quota. I'm trying in 'Pará-regional'.

One suggestion I can give you is: Write to your advisors in Japan and ask them to notify you if they know something. If you want, I can post here the email I sent to mine professor. I got a positive response, so my supervisor knowing anything, he will warn me, as soon as possible. 👍
 
Well, according to previous threads of last years, we could possibly get the results from the professors that who have given us loas at around mid Dec, which is only around one month left. I'm becoming a bit exciting as the big date is approaching and I guess I will actively contact my supervisor in Japan to see if he has got anything from MEXT. Wish everbody here good luck!

I'm in the same critical situation like you. I was the last one who passed the primary screening by the embassy (I'm number 11). I will be most likely a substitute if not failed the secondary screening. The results will be announced in December 2010.
I wish I can keep my position as a regular nominee, it is my dream.
I am very much worried and disappointed.
