Hello,

If possible, please kindly help me with meaning of the sentence below:

本書 プロゲラミン 言語Javaと その基本ライブラリ 一である
および 少ないですが java.util.concurrentと java.io
みなさんが 最も 効果的に するのを 手助けする ことを 目的と しています。

I could translate it literally as:

This book contain Java programming language and its fundamental
libraries as well as a little of java.util.concurent and java.io,
the goal is to help everyone to use it mostly effective.

But I am not sure about proper translation of 一である expression.

Another difficulty is 少ないですが. I think that adjective 少ない modifies the noun java.util.concurrent, but I am not clear why ですが expression was attached to 少ない and which meaning it may convey.

In addition, I can not understand the purpose of を particle attached to the java.io noun.
Maybe, a reason is to mark java.io as direct object, but I could not find that transitive verb which refers to java.io noun.

Thank you very much! :sorry:

That Japanese sentences are totally broken. It sounds like someone translate it by using internet translator.
That's natural that you don't understand, stuff you asked about doesn't make any sense. I'm sorry.^^b

Kay from Kobeさん、

Thank you very much for your kind help :sorry:

That sentence from the Japanese book I have bought before.
Maybe it sound so terribly wrong because I have made a lot of type mistakes.

I will check that text again. :sorry:

ah, I see :) Then I can guess the original one from that Japanese.
>一である

I guess the original of this one is 一である. If so, that means "one of the "
>ですが

and this usually means "though,"
So, it's more like this
"This book contain Java programming language and SOMETHING(it's not said in the Japanese) that one of its fundamental libraries. Also, not a lot though, java.util.concurrent and java.io..."
It's missing verbs so I can't finish the sentence, sorry^^;
If you could put the original Japanese, I can help you with that.

Good luck!

Kay from Kobeさん

Thank you very much for your kind help.
Unfortunately, I can not rely on my poor memory while learning Japanese.
I hope that I can correct my mistakes and put the original sentence soon.

Thank you very much. :sorry:

I am very sorry that I was not attentive. Indeed, I did not type the sentence correctly. I hope, below is right Japanese sentence.

本書 プロゲラミン 言語Javaと その基本 ライブラリ 一である java.lang、 java.util、 および 少ないですが java.util.concurrentと java.io
みなさんが 最も 効果的に 使用するのを 手助けする ことを 目的と しています。

But, unfortunately, the correction could not help me. So the questions stays the same...

I am not sure about proper translation of 一である expression.

Reason of ですが expression which follows 少ない i-adjective also is not so clear to me. Because so far I met such expression only at end of a sentence.

Noun java.io has a を particle attached. But I could not find a transitive verb which requires を particle.

Thank you very much! :sorry:

本書 プロゲラミン 言語Javaと その基本 ライブラ リ 一である java.lang、 java.util、 および 少ないですが java.util.concurrentと java.io
みなさんが 最も 効果的に 使用するのを 手助けす る ことを 目的と しています。

Looks like still missing some parts...?

本書はプログラミング言語Javaとその基本ライブラリーであるjava.lang、 java.util、 および
少ないですがjava.util.concurrentとjava.io
みなさんが最も効果的に使用するのを手助けすることを 目的としています。

is my guess.
It's not 一である - ライブラリー is one word (library).
I break the sentences as follows, which might help you to understand this sentence. :)

本書は

プログラミング言語Java

その基本ライブラリーであるjava.lang、java.util、
および
(少ないですが)java.util.concurrentとjava.io

みなさんが最も効果的に使用するのを手助けすることを

目的としています。

I, too, bet it's not a kanji 一[いち] but the long vowel mark "ー", or "基本ライブラリーである".

少ないですが is an adjectival clause modifying "java.util.concurrentとjava.io", and ですが adds an effect similar to the non-defining use of the relative pronoun; "java.util.concurrent and java.io, which is a few/not so many,..."

undrentideさん、

I am so sorry, even I tried to check several times, I could not spot that missed parts.
Thank you always for your kind explanations. Sentences became little bit clearer for me. I hope, that I could understand the meaning but some parts still not so clear.

本書は

プログラミング言語Java

その基本ライブラリーであるjava.lang、java.util、
および
(少ないですが)java.util.concurrentとjava.io

みなさんが最も効果的に使用するのを手助けすること

目的としています。

I was thinking と could express logical and like "programming language Java and its fundamental libraries, which is java.lang、java.util.

As for を particle, maybe last time (こと) it was used to depict direct object of the する verb (しています). Unfortunately, I have no idea why を was placed after java.util.concurrentとjava.io noun.

Maybe this sentence too hard for me to understand it fully. And asking many times on same simple things could be discourteous...

Toritoribeさん、

Thank you very much for your kind explanation and for mention adjectival clause.
I will try to read about it.

Thank you very much!

Don't be discouraged, Nonezumi san, you've got it almost right! :)

About the two を, the first one is to make the whole items listed (~と~および~) the direct object of the verb 使用する.
最も効果的に modifies 使用する.

The second を indicates that 使用することを is the object of the verb (目的と)する, as you understood correctly.

Hope this helps. :)

本書は 『「みなさんが Javaと java.util.concurrentとjava.io、 および java.util.concurrentとjava.io を 使用する」 のを 手助けする』 ことを 目的としています

Does this make sense?;-)

"Javaとjava.util.concurrentとjava.io、およびjava.util.concurrentとjava.io" or "Java, java.util.concurrent, java.io, java.util.concurrent and java.io" are all the direct object of 使用する. Similarly, 使用するの/こと is the direct object of 手助けする, and 手助けすること is the direct object of 目的としています.

The core of the sentence is "This book is aiming at helping readers(=みなさん) use~".

undrentideさん、

Ah, now I can see why the sentence has been broken exactly in that way. It is a wonderful pile of the verbs chained by を particle. Thank you so much.

Toritoribeさん、

Yes, it makes sense in a most perfect way. Thank you so much for outlining sentence structure.

undrentideさん、Toritoribeさん

Thank you very much for, as always, perfect explanations.:sorry:
