what is the perferred verb "to have" in japanese? my 2 crappy quasidictionarys say obiru or aru... and online translators say 持ちなさい but i can only read hiragana, not the first kanji?

ie: "i have a [object]", or "do you have any [object]"

持っている（もっている）

There are differences in the two.

Examples :

★持つ

ちょっとこれを持ってください。
Could you hold this for a second?

それ、おもそうですね。わたしが持ちます。
That looks heavy. I will carry that (for you).

★持っている

英語（えいご）の辞書（辞書）を持っていますか。
Do you have an English dictionary?

（わたしは）子供（こども）の頃（ころ）に、ハローキティのぬいぐるみを持っていました。
When I was a child, I used to have a Hello Kitty plushie.

お金を持っていますか。
Do you have (any) money?

I don't know "obiru" to mean "to have". You can use "aru":
お金がない "I don't have any money"
大きな病気はありますか "Do you have any serious illnesses?"
もつ is more like "carry" or "hold" rather than "have".
お金持っていない "I didn't bring any money" (but maybe I have some in the bank/at home).

It depends on the object or context which verb should be used.

I have a pen.
ペン[ぺん]を持[も]っている。

I have a cat.
猫[ねこ]を飼[か]っている。

I have a plan.
計画[けいかく]がある。

The earth has magnetism.
地球[ちきゅう]は磁気[じき]を帯[お]びている。
