In the Voice Chat session we had today, Ashikaga-san was asking for great super-hot curry shops in Tokyo.

I checked some shops out here:

Agura in Ameyoko
An old, respected establishment that hasn't moved out from Ameyoko (but seems to have renovated!). They don't have 50 levels, but will make curry as hot as you wish!

Akasaka Moti
In Akasaka, a nice place I've been to. Will also make curry super-hot for you.

Magic Spice in Shimokitazawa (a bit west of Shinjuku)
Haven't been here, but seems to be popular for hot curries!!

In my first trip to Japan my friend recommended the following curry shop in Kyoto , and we went there without hesitation.

We had a nice meal trying a hot curry! and after that we went to visit Kiyomizu to drink some pure water to cool ours throats

I will definitely try the one in Ueno. Moti sounds really nice, too.... When it comes to curry, if it's not spicy, then what is the point!?

There was also a mention of a restaurant that serves Tibetan curry in the blog. I bet THAT is super super hot. I used to have many Tibetan friends back in Boston and oh, boy! they LOVE spicy food! They use this really spicy tomato-based condiment for everything. It's basically chopped up tomatoes with minced garlic and hot chili peppers. It goes really well with Momos (their version of stuffed dumplings), but it is SO spicy it literally hurts your mouth. lol

Man, I can't wait for my next trip to Tokyo!

If you ever visit the Kansai there is a great curry shop in my neighborhood, Subhi Mahal which has a hot salad that will knock your socks off!

I can vouch for Magic Spice. Wonderful Thai curry with a choice of 10 levels of spiciness (10 is rather hot...)

Excellent menu (including veggie choices), decor, atmosphere, but prepare to have to queue 30-60mins at popular times.

Other than that... as a veggie, Japanese curry places are out (the base for all the sauces seems to be pork.) But I've been to dozens of wonderful Indian restaurants (apart from the Samurat chain, which isn't all that bad.) My favourite is currently on the 4F of a building overlooking 'the' koban near Tokyu Hands in Shibuya. Sorry, can't remember the name !

There used to be a small hole-in-the-wall place in Yurakucho called Indira Curry. It's Kashmir curry and Bengal curry were so hot as to be almost inedible, but so so satisfying. I'm not sure if it's still there, but you can find another branch behind police headquarters in Shibuya. The curry at this branch is not quite as hot but still good.

Coco Ichiban will make curry dishes to your desired level of "karai"-ness. Try level 5 first (it's about as hot as the Kashmir curry from Indira Curry-Yurakucho. If that's not enough, try level 6, but the chef will warn you not to try it.

Agra in Ueno

Well... was it spicy? Not as spicy as I had expected it to be.

Was it tasty? YES!!!

My colleague and I drove to Ueno yesterday to try out the restaurant epigene had recommended (Agra).

We had a bit of a hard time finding the restaurant as the "Ame-yoko" area of Ueno is like a big maze. After about half an hour of walking around, I called the restaurant and the nice woman who answered the phone gave us the direction.

I ordered the Chicken Masala Curry that was one of the lunch specials while my colleague ordered the Butter Chicken Curry. You could choose the level of spiciness (1．普通/Regular 2．やや辛め/Somewhat Spicy 3．辛め/Spicy 4．大辛/Very Spicy 5．究極の辛さ/The ULTIMATE. Extremely Spicy). My colleague, who is a wimp when it comes to spicy food, ordered his Regular. Me, a Man, ordered mine the ULTIMATE.

Well, I was expecting it to be so spicy it would hurt my mouth, but it was not THAT spicy. Perhaps my taste buds were numb after all these years of eating spicy food. My colleague who had a teeeny weeeny taste of my curry broke out in sweat instantaneously.

The lunch special (￥1,100) came with a nan and a small "cup" of salad, which was inexplicably tossed with Japanese-style soy sause & sesame based dressing.

The curry itself was very good with a few chunks of chicken and onion. I really enjoyed it, and I'd recommend it to anyone who likes Indian food.

The men in my family like hot curry, but they're not in your league. I'll let you know if I should get more info on super-hot curry restaurants!

What neighborhood is this, exactly? I've been living in Tajima for about 9 months now, and most of my decent curry adventures take place in southern Hyogo anyway (Himeji, mainly). I'd love to know about anything spicy.

I know it's not Tokyo, but so far the spiciest thing I've had has been soup curry in the Susukino area of Sapporo. I asked for the level 10 and was warned 3 times about it being too spicy for most. It had me sweating, but it was delicious!
