If it is pronounced "se - nyu" then it does not mean anything in Japanese.
If it is pronounced "sen - nyu", then it could be several things (like what Glanski explained), but never a surname.

I did not say you cannot use it as a name, it could be a surname in other languages, just there's no Japanese name pronounced "Senyu".

Does it matter with whom and why? I can't remember after all these years. Suffice it to say that they were reputable companies that hired qualified native speakers to teach at corporations/banks in the evening. I would NEVER work for any of the major teaching companies as they are total slave houses and do not pay as much as the smaller, reputable ones. ECC is an example why I never worked for the major names.

I would never, and never did, advise someone to go with a "fly-by-night employer". Read my post again. I just mentioned my experience and insinuated that they are there, even today, and anyone who really wants to can find a teaching job in Japan even if it is with a lesser reputable company.

Therefore, I would appreciate it if you didn't put words in my mouth or insinuate that I was advising someone what to do when I was relating an experience I personally had. If I were advising someone I would preface my post with "I advise you to......" or "I suggest that you......". My experience is NOT indicitave of all experiences. I just related that the possibility exists as much today as it did back then in "pre-historic" times. I guarantee that within one day I, or anyone, could find employment as an English teacher in Japan regardless of race, experience, or degree if one had the "right" visa and didn't need to be sponsored.

The truth be told, there are still "schools" that will hire anyone who is not a native speaker to teach English if they do not have to provide a visa and /or sponsor them. Therefore, there will always be employment opportunities for those that want to "teach" English even if they are there on a cultural visa. Always has been and always will be. They just may have to do more "legwork" to find those jobs, but they will be there.

Besides, did I offer any advice to the OP? Did I not use the words "one" and "you" (referring to the general form of "you" meaning anyone?)

At no time did I try to put words in your mouth, but face it. You didn't really say anything negative about the fly by night places to warn him off. Yes, they still exist, but at least I told it like it is, saying they are places to avoid. You didn't, and simply for that reason, I felt the OP should know.

Thanks, by the way for the few more details on who hired you. They were certainly sufficient; no company name was needed, but the details you gave were.

This implies that the major ones are not reputable. In what way? It also says they don't pay as much as smaller companies. I beg to differ. There may be exceptions, but for the most part, employers charge about the same (250,000-280,000 yen/month).

ECC is an example why I never worked for the major names.

Considering that ECC is rated fairly high, what are your beefs? I'm not saying it's perfect, but people rate it better than (the former) NOVA and GEOS, which are 2 of the big 4.

Studying the language in order to learn it would probably not be allowed for a cultural visa, but would rather be done with a student visa. If you are going to study calligraphy or some other form of artistic expression using the language, that would fall more under the description by MOFA:

Academic or artistic activities that provide no income, activities for the purpose of pursuing specific studies on Japanese culture or arts, or activities for the purpose of learning and acquiring skills in Japanese culture or arts under the guidance of experts (for example, ikebana, tea ceremony, judo, etc.).

As for who can sponsor you, MOFA is typically vague, but here are the guidelines for the documents you must file:

1. In cases where the person concerned intends to engage in academic or artistic activities, or to engage in specific studies of Japanese culture or arts, the following materials are required.
1. Documents certifying the activity and its duration of the person concerned, and the outline of the organization where he or she intends to engage in the activity concerned.
2. Documents certifying the academic career, professional career, and other career regarding the activity of the person concerned.
3. Documents certifying that the person concerned can defray all expenses incurred during the stay in Japan.
2. In cases where the person concerned intends to learn Japanese culture or arts under the guidance of an expert, additional materials showing the career and the achievements of the expert, besides the documents mentioned above, are required.

What's in it for the sponsor? Student interest. More acclaim.
They don't have to pay anything to sponsor you, if that's what you're driving at. They would probably turn you down for any number of reasons.
1. you may not be serious enough.
2. you may not be talented enough.
3. they might be too busy at the time.
4. they might think dealing with a foreigner is a hassle.
