Should prostitution be legalised?

In the US we already have places like "Hooters" that basically get business by using womens bodies to sell food and drinks. I can imagine that they would be keen on becoming a brothel as well. They have to pay for liquor licenses and such so this would be another way to make more money for the community as well.

I say, yes it should be legalized. The tax revenues would be enormous and having it regulated and controlled would probably cut down on rape and STD's that are so prevelant today. Making it illegal only entices crime as everyone knows the "worlds oldest profession" will not disappear just because it is illegal.

The human body was made to have sex, especially the males where the drive is neverending. If we were not made to have sex, then I believe that we would be like the animals where the sex drive would be turned on once or twice a year and that there would be a "mating season" where the countries of the world would shut down until the mating is completed. "Go forth and multiply" we are told.

Since the male sex drive cannot be turned off at will there must be an outlet every so often or illness like prostate cancer could result. As this article in New Scientist suggests, frequent self-pleasuring for males may just prevent cancer from developing in the prostate. However, one cannot do that forever without having the real thing every now and then especially for single males.

Therefore, the legalizing of prostitution will provide just that outlet for males that is so needed and driven by our hormones. Also, it will take away the stigma associated with going to a prostitute.

Women don't have to become prostitutes as it would be a choice/profession and a very lucritive one at that as there would be a neverending supply of customers. The same holds true for males. In a legalized prostitution society there would also be an outlet for women who may desire something different without going to a singles bar and maybe meeting a psycho.

Although prostitution is "illegal" in Japan there is an outlet with the host/hostess bars and "cabarets" for companionship which may or may not lead to sex. Plus there are the "soap lands", massage parlors, no-pan kisa's (no panty coffee shops), etc and every major city hs their own "red light" district where one can go to find sex. It may still exist today, but back in the 70's and 80's there was a small area in Shinjuku where one could go where the woman sat outside of small store fronts. If you liked one you just went in, paid your 3-5,000 yen and you left a satisfied man! Did I frequent that area as a college student? Yes, every now and then, and it was a most welcome treat and release during the times I was alone.

In Japan, at least there is an opportunity and the police turn a blind eye to it because, before the Americans took over after WWII, prostitution was a legal, accepted profession in Japan and was not looked down upon.

As was mentioned by others like MM, you are going there for a service and you are not purchasing a body or a piece of meat. Maybe your woman does not perform something you fantasize about or like and you desire it. Therefore, you go to a prostitute and purchase that "service" and it may even include coitus and your desire is fulfilled for the time being.

The same holds true for a female. They would go to a male prostitute for a service or purchase their companionship via a safe, reliable, escort service.

Sex is so natural to the human body that to make prostitution illegal is just cruel and inhumane punishment forcing the males (and some females) to find release elsewhere where it is often illegal and dangerous.

What really surprised me was that prostitution is legal in Singapore. I would never have thought it. They really have their heads on their shoulders over there and understand the basic needs of the human body along with a handful of other countries.

That would be a problem with the police rather than the brothel though.

If the brothel's behind it...

Yes i agree, "offering of sexual service" would probably be a better term than "selling of sex".

Same meaning, different way of saying it.

I have sexual desires, but i can quite easily ignore them and even let them go. Though, i've never liked the word "may" used inconjunction with anything pertaining to "science." Even so, it's possible that avenues may help, but does not the male body "let it go" every once in a while?

Thank you for reminding me of another problem with it, easier adultery. Since it's legal, more people may take the risk of getting caught. Then again, it's not the government's job to force morals on people. Though, i do believe that records should be kept and all legally married people should receive a notice in the mail that they received this service. The postage fees would be part of the service fees. A protection of common marriage values can be established by doing so, since couples who don't care can just throw the notice away.

Adultery has been going on since the invention (of) marriage. I can't see how legalizing prostitution would cause an increase. No one seems to have any trouble finding some to fool around with, being married doesn't stop it and neither would legal prostitutes. Talk about taking someone personal freedom away....send out cards saying you went to a prostitute. I don't want to live in your world.

Adultry is not a problem, it is natural. Not being willing to come to terms with nature is the problem which had caused that by the need for lineage some of the early agricultural specific ethnic social groups.

Sexual release is very important in most cases. There will always be the asexual makes, but they are very few and far in between. And, of course, there will of course be the standard spread of continuum between the states, as well, but the bell curve norm represents the bulk of sample spaces.

Legal and controlled sexual services will allow for this. I would suggest certain controls so as to keep the business profit levels (meaning above the income a single service person would be making) under close watch. No runaway profiteering. Sanitation, as stated earlier, would have to be watched closely too. Just as the health department (in the USA, at least) makes sudden checks on establishments, giving them a grade, it would have to do so the sexual services establishments as well.

Abrahamic or Indus plains belief systems' stipulation beyond what nature provides in social settings, would have no sway over the matter.

('of' correction my addition)

Actually, the invention of marriage is fairly new, yet adultry (in a general sense of being copulating with more than one mate at a time) is as old as sex...so....there you have it. Adultry, like promiscuity, is as much a part of nature as the tendency in the homo sapien to pair bond for a time.

Very true, before marriage we were still cheating. Women always know they are the mothers of their kids, men don't necessarily know they are the fathers....

I read an interesting book on prostitutes. There was a section on the Romans, they actually coined money with the act of sex pictured on it...the sex act depicted determined the value of the money. Also it allowed foreigners to go to a brothel and get what they wanted without having to speak the language. Just give 'em the coin!

Sex is sex. It's not a bad thing. I would rather a woman make her fare share than a pimp.

Interesting ! I had not gotten that one yet; thanks. Also there was what is considered a very early advertising for prostitution in Ephesis with the 'feet imprint' on the stone of the road. One could go into the library, and then connect with the house.

Yes, indeed !!! Also good working conditions, very natural and human friendly environments and the right to object to, report, or refuse certain 'unwanted clients;' free from the fear of persecution for such.

Exactly! I really do think it would improvement the "illegal" system we have going now. Getting prostitution in the open, where everyone can see can only help. It would be safer, for both sides.

Prostitution should be legal. what is wrong with a man wanting to spend time in bed with a pretty woman?? I sure would like it but I am just not able to find a willing woman.
For some reason I just cannot attract women. I have had sex but ALL of them were just wanting someone to help SUPPORT them and to me this is also prostitution!

The bigger point is that the average woman does not really care much for sex, period!

Sadly, The only way I could ever find a petty woman to go to bed with is to pay.

Try pimping yourself out, if you attract customers, women that is as opposed to men, you have proven yourself wrong.

I have mixed feelings. Since prostitution will continue whether or not it's legal, legalising it at least allows it to be regulated, making it safer for those involved and allowing it to be taxed. However, it worries me that legalising prostitution legitimises it and gives the impression that it's acceptable to view sex and one's body (especially since the vast majority of prostitutes are female) as a commodity that can be bought and sold.

Making generalisations about women that have no basis whatever in fact won't help you attract them

I think prostitution should be legalised. But only because it is something that goes on regardless of whether it is legal or not- the "oldest profession in the world" some call it.

Legalisation would allow much better regulation, and better regulation could be used to;

a. Help tackle the human trafficking industry.
b. Raise tax for the economy.
c. Help protect those in the profession.
d. Help tackle the spread of STD's.
e. Help those who want to get out of the profession.

Tsuyoiko: Yes i agree there could be a problem concerning legalizing it = making it more socially acceptable. But i think regardless of the legal status of prostitution, i think more should be done to educate men about its numerous negative side effects, like funding human trafficking and all sorts of other major illegal trades like illegal drugs, weapons & general crime etc. I am sure most women currently in prostitution are not happy women (and probably a lot suffer from addictions like drug or alcohol addictions). I don't think men really think about these sorts of things when they consider paying a prostitute a visit, and its this ignorance that perpetuates a lot of the problems that prostitution creates.

I'm of the same opinion as George Carlin: selling is legal, ******* is legal, why isn't selling ******* legal?
