I am not a great fan of Harry Potter series (sorry fans but for the purpose of practicing Japanese (because there are translations into many other languages), I would like to get an electronic version. Can someone please give me a link to an online Harry Potter book - (volume 1 "Philosophers' Stone" - "ハリー・ポッターと賢者の石").

If I had a book I would search by putting in strings from the book but I don't have it.

AFAIK, there is no electronic version of the Harry Potter series in Japanese. The selection of e-books in Japanese is limited in the first place, and I think its Japanese publisher is interested in sellilng only paper-based copies.

FYI, Aozora Bunko offers only works for which copyright has expired.

I'm sure there certainly are e-books available in Japanese, but alas not in any legal form. I'm also equally sure that Jref isn't a place to find information on illegal stuff.

P.S. The Harry Potter books don't translate particularly well into Japanese for the purposes of either English-learning or Japanese-learning through comparison, I believe. That's largely because of the use of; obscure English, Latin, and author-invented 'English' words. Hope that helps - cheers!

I still hope there could be something. I wonder if someone could type a Japanese sentence from a middle of the book (exactly but there could be variant spellings) and check using google? If you have copyright concerns, please PM me

Not too worried about the things you described about the value of such learning but I am aware of them. I also know about mistranslations.

I'm sorry I can't help you with it since I don't own any Harry Potter book in Japanese...

Regarding the Japanese translation of the book, I've heard quite a lot about how Rowling's creative English had been translated and that the translator had to be very inventive, too, to be comprehensible to the Japanese readership. So, you may have problems understanding "why" and "how" the English matches the Japanese in various parts of the book. Considering that the books sold well in Japan, the translation had been done reasonably well.

Unfortunately, this applies to most good books (well written). Otherwise, I will stick to Hanashibanashi (the easiest), newspaper articles (not bad, especially with an English translation) and manga (I can only ope with some).

It might as well be another book, as long as I can find 1) an electronic Japanese version or a paper book with Furigana 2) an English or Russian translation (paper or online) 3) perhaps not too hard.

You're right, I searched using some keywords, including グラニングス (Grunnings) (where Mr Dursley worked) and couldn't find anything. If there are, they night be in a non-searchable format.

Your main problems are that the translator could have completely changed words. So grunnings may have be renamed to something else. It is useless trying spells. Your best option is to try a word like 'london' with 'harry potter' and it may come up with things from the middle.

The best option is to buy the book and get it shipped.
The book costs around 4000Yen off amazon.jp, which is about 18GBP. I think this comes to about 43AUD, so it isn't that expensive.
Hey, and then you can put your own furigana on the text etc!

In other news, the cover is rather bland... Nothing like the UK or American editions.

Oh, and by the way, I HATE HARRY POTTER.

Fair enough, as I said I am not a big fan either but I've got the translation.

I can buy it for 50 bucks here, I just thought it wasn't worth it

I've got it now from amazon.co.jp, thanks for the advise. The delivery was more expensive than the book. Lots of Furigana used - very helpful. Planning to read after Nana manga (volume 1).

By the way, my original request:
ハリー・ポッターと賢者の石 (It's a Chinese language forum but it seems the whole book transcript is published there (in posts). I checked some passages, they matched 100%.

Grunnings was spelled as グラニングズ. That's why my search missed it.

My progress is slow as I am busy at work/home, learning Chinese Mandarin I am reading the book in Chinese as well but I am looking for a partner in reading it or more help from native Japanese speakers.
