I heard somewhere that chinese was a very difficult language to learn or the most difficult, anyway, what impresses me the most is the number of character someone must learn in order to write/read in chinese, I heard it was around 5000+ which is an astromical number. Also is it possible that there are less syntax in chinese, because it would seem extremely difficult to learn the syntax with all the other stuff... Also, do you have to speak chinese in order to work in relation with the chinese ambassy or it doesn't matter either you speak french/english or chinese.

In my opinion, a man knows 300-500 characters can understand almost all Chinese posts. 5000 is too more for common people.
Leaning Chinese is very difficult at beginning, but easy at last.
Leaning English is very easy at beginning, but diffcult as last for you must learn more and more words. Chinese characters don't go up for 3500 years, this is why common Chinese can understand those articles written in 3000 years ago without translation.

Oh!he!he!why learning chinese very difficult?

if you firmly to learning chinese for a long time i surely your can translation.

i totally agree with you

Chinese is easy because it does not have inflection. All you have to do is string words together. Unlike Japanese, Chinese tone is almost invariably fixed. Kanji characters used in Japanese have a multitude of pronunciations for each character, but for most of the Hanzi characters one or two pronunciations are sufficient.

you need about 2500 or so for reading newspapers and things like that. 500 isnt really all that big of a number, considering the average U.S. high school graduate has a vocabulary of about 20000 words...
