の particle as a nominalizer

Can someone please explain to me how の is used as a nominalizer for verbs and when to use it? For ex：

だれにこの本をもらったのですか。 "From whom did you receive this book?"

If の is truly being used as a verb nominalizer here what is the literal translation? "Received the book, from whom did you?" (as Yoda might put it)


Would it be correct (and accepted) to say:

だれにこの本をもらったか？or even if の replaced か at then end of the sentence.

It's not being used as a nominalizer here.
The literal translation would be something like:
"whom from this book oj received please explain ?"

No. Putting か directly after a plain form verb sounds unnatural. You could say:
だれにこの本をもらったのか？ (male)
だれにこの本をもらったの？
だれにこの本をもらいましたか？

Yeah like JimmySeal said, it's not a nominaliser in this case. That の is used as a question particle when hunting for more information or giving an explanation. I still have a lot of troubles with it as I can't figure out the exact nuance.
The nominaliser の is used much the same way as out "ing" to "to" as in "fishing" or "to fish".
On a related topic, can somebody tell me if both the use of の and こと as nominalisers is right in the following situation:
東京へ行ったことありますか。
東京へ行ったのありますか。
I know the first one is correct, but is the の version correct too?

の wouldn't work in the situation you mention Bucko, and to be grammatically correct, it would have to be ～ことがありますか, but in casual speech, the が could be omitted. ～ことがある is a set phrase and can't be interchanged with ～のがある

I think の at the end of a casual question is more common than ka... but maybe ka is used if you didn't get the intonation right? if you didn't make it sound like it was a question, so you put a ka at the end to clarify it?
and we were told "ka" is not wrong, but a bit strange in casual speech...

and の as a nominalizer is used if you need a verb to become a noun... and koto can often be used too... like

本を読むのが好きです。
本を読むことが好きです。

I thought was only used when the nomalized verb is part of a question.

Using の（か） as a question marker I think often refocuses the sentence to make it more like you're talking about someone else. If a translation is "what am I going to do/what should I do" it is どうするかな？どうしようかな？ while どうするの（か） is closer to what are you going to do ?

「そうするのかな」は使いません。
