Is a 10Gbps High-Speed Connection Necessary for a Typical Household Internet?

Today, we had an upgrade to a 10G high-speed internet connection installed at our home.
Until now, we had been using a 1Gbps connection, which provided speeds of around 720–860Mbps during the day, and we were quite satisfied with it. However, since a 10Gbps high-speed connection became available even in this rural area, we decided to upgrade.
Currently, our download speed has reached an ultra-fast 5.3Gbps.
The monthly cost is ¥6,710. Previously, it was ¥5,478, so it's an increase of ¥1,232. However, considering that the speed is now about seven times faster, we are satisfied with the upgrade.
That said, since we don't play online games, we are now thinking about how best to make use of this high-speed connection.

Using fast.com we get this, which is plenty fast for most anything.

But that and other differences (ping/jitter) depend on where the target server is located--is it someplace within japan, or not.

If the target server is domestic, we get these very fast numbers; but if US, oz, euro, etc, then speeds will be far slower.

The other factor is time of day--if it's a busy time or not. This is now, early morning. Evening at around 19:30 might be 650 or so.

Wow, you guys are super fast. I'm at about 370mbps (I'm on a 500mbps plan).
When the cable guy installed the modem, he said I didn't need anything faster that 500mbps, even if I was live-streaming video games.

I only surf the web and stream a few shows. We haven't noticed any problems, but compared to you guys I feel super inferior.
My cost is only $29/month though, so that's good for me. A 1 gig plan would cost me $55/month, but honestly, I don't notice any lag even if all the devices are plugged in and connected to the wifi.

I'm getting 620mbps but I pay a lot more than that. We have Japanese TV streaming almost constantly plus kids are often streaming video games and watching youtube at the same time. Plus security cameras. The bigger problem is that we constantly went over the 1.2TB/month Comcast limit and I paid a lot of overage fees before I switched to the unlimited plan.

I have 1gbps which often ends up like 940mbps. Also have Japanese tv streaming all day. kids streaming. some video calls. I have no limit. Also security camera. Supposedly we are getting upgraded to 8gbps but it got delayed, tbh I doubt I would notice the upgrade. In a house 1gbps is not likely to be insufficient.

I'm currently considering switching from Astound (used to be RCN) to T-Mobile 5G home internet. T-Mobile offers a 15 day trial, which we are almost to the end of. Both plans are for similar speeds but the latency on the T-Mobile 5G connection is higher (Cable ~12/13, 5G 35-45). I have also noticed that downloads are in general slower and the high use times have a greater impact. However... the Astound plan is now $126 with taxes and fees for 400Mbps and the T-Mobile plan is $50 for the same. I think we will probably just accept the slightly poorer service with the T-Mobile plan. The only other options in the area are Comcast/Xfinity which is just as bad on pricing and has worse service, or Starlink which has decent service but is more expensive.

Interesting I pay about 60 dollars for 1G fiber, it is a small private ISP made for our neighborhood that upstream links to centurylink. Supposedly much of the equipment is able to do 8G but we need new a new ONT. I do not believe I would notice any difference between 1G and 8G.

That price difference for you is more than double I can see why you'd put up T-mobile. It also depends on what you use it for. Nice that the area my inlaws are in in Nagasaki prefecture also has 1G fiber.

I decided to go with T-Mobile. I'm just so sick of the cable company raising rates without any notice. Even after cancelling, before half the term is up I still have to pay for the entire term. I guess we will see how it goes but at least T-Mobile has been far easier to work with, I have had them as my mobile provider for almost 10 years now.

I've had Spectrum for over 40 years and consider them a rip off but too lazy to change. I pay $95US /14475Y a month for just internet. Depending on time of day I get uploads between 8 and 11.7 Mbps and downloads between 108 and 493 Mbps.
