I think it's kinda wrong to just want a *Japanese* friend. I mean I would be insulted if someone was only my friend cuz I was American. Looking for friends based on race is pathetic. Wait until you go to college and look for people that share the same interests you. Then you will likely find Japanese people that are into your interests and will be great friends and not because of their race.

If you are looking for someone who is Japanese to share culture differences and languages with, I suggest looking into one of the penpal programs. Many people try that, Japanese and American alike. Not for "racist reasons" either. Sure, if you are just looking for someone who is Japanese to exploit them that is wrong, but if you are looking for someone from a culture to share experiences that is different.

But there was an element of the 日本人ならだれでもいい to it, or at least it could be read that way. That's part of the trouble with text-based communication with strangers. It's impossible to always know for sure if we're reading things exactly as they were intended.

In the past I've had a number of Japanese people come up to me and do the "Can I practice my English on you?" thing, and I hate it. Not because I'm a butthole (even though I am a butthole), but because the other person had made it abundantly clear that just anyone who spoke English and had a pulse would fit their requirements, and that they had nothing to say or ask that specifically had to be said to or asked of me in particular.

Decades of NHK3 Eikaiwa programs to the contrary notwithstanding, not all gaijins are everybody's instant buddy enthusiastically ready to stand there and be a sounding board.

I'm sorry to bust your chops like that InuYasha! I seriously do understand what you mean but I wasn't sure from your post what you wanted. I'm happy you didn't want to exploit them. Anyway, good luck with your search. Maybe going to Japanese Forums on other sites and posting a friendly will get you some friends.

Oh sorry Mike Cash,it must be annoying but I can't help feeling jealous actually. It is way better than people avoiding you because they think you don't speak well.
I was in overseas for a bit and I really got fed up people calling me Chinese and not listening to me because they just can't be arsed with my bad English.

It depends on your current level of Japanese but if your vocab is below 2000 level, chatting over the phone would be pretty stressful. You should try a pen friend?

I totally agree with undrentide. The OP is no longer with us (I think).

Also, looking for a Japanese friend isn't that easy and takes time, unless you're extremely lucky. People need common interests and other things they can share together to become lasting friends. Looking for someone in the same age group is also a good idea, as GreenCat pointed out.

I believe this thread is no longer of any use to anybody and will close the thread.
