Zao accommodation

Does anyone know a cheapish place to stay in Zao, Yamagata that has a bit of character- ie not a business hotel

I typed in "Zao Japan" and a zillion sites came up on it. Looks like someone is going skiing.

Zao is a mountain in a boundary of Yamagata and Miyagi of Tohoku region.

if it's a mountain resort, wouldn't business hotels be less common? Did the OP do any searching of their own?

Of course I searched the net. But can't read Japanese and its always nice to get a personal opinion of a recommended place rather than propaganda from the hotel itself or websites that have no pictures or detailed info.
