1. INTRODUCTION
This guide book is mainly intended for new exchange students applying for Jobu University.
The purpose of the book is providing information what will make exchange students life easier.
This guide book made for help of exchange students in Japan and Gunma prefecture, to get settled at area and it will answer some of the questions that might arise before or after arriving to Japan.
When arriving to Japan the first thing is realizing is that time needed to understand the culture which surrounds exchange student. It is a different world and things may not work as expected. Especially communicating with Japanese people is not simple. Your study of Japanese language only covers the basics of people to people communication. Your Japanese language skills may not be sufficient for your studies at the university. You may speak and listen to oral Japanese but naturally everything inside the university is written in Kanji and Hiragana. It is certainly helpful if you studied written Japanese including Katakana and Hiragana before your arrival to Japan. Katakana is usually used for the pronunciation of foreign words, such as restaurant menus and shop names.
Even though in Tokyo, English language is well understood and spoken, in Gunma or Jobu University English is only spoken in rare occasions. Exchange student must communicate with Japanese language. Even some of the students in Jobu University can speak English language limitedly, but are they willing to speak English depend on person you are talking to. Some Japanese people feel shame because of their English accent and therefore are not willing to speak English. Still it is interesting and fun experience.
Good luck for your studies in Jobu University
