Working in Japan after finishing MEXT scholarship

Hi all friends,

I am planning to be a research student in Japan for MEXT 2016 scholarship (interview and exam next week), and be there until completion of master degree. My research field is embedded systems and electronics design.

My dream is to work and live in Japan, but MEXT scholarship requires that I return back to my country. What I understood from searching online is:

I must search for a job just before my scholarship ends, then find a company/employer that can support me in terms of a visa... then apply for a working visa from my country.

However, can't I just do that while staying in Japan? Also, what about living there? I intent to get permanent residence in Japan, but it is too far to think about now. Can that happen? how many years does it take?

After your scholarship is up, I presume your schooling is up. That means your student visa will be canceled. You would have to stay here as a tourist, which means a limited time.

If you find an employer willing to sponsor a work visa before you actually have to leave, you can apply for the visa without leaving Japan. Some schools are a tiny bit flexible in allowing students to stay a few weeks past their graduation date before they cancel the student visa. Case by case, though. You could finish school, change your visa status to tourist, find a job, apply without leaving Japan, and start work. That assumes you actually find a job in that time frame, so I'd encourage making contacts as early as possible. Advisors sometimes have contacts to help.

Yes, of course you can always get permanent residence status, but it takes a long time, ~10 years (shorter if you are married to a Japanese).

So I guess If I had contacts to Japanese companies early or employment agencies (do you know any), it will be a great thing to do.

About permanent residence, I've read stuff that you posted. However, 10 consecutive years? they say it must include a 5 years of work in Japan at least... so I guess the 3 or so years that I will spend studying there will count?

Also, it will be shorter if I contributed to Japan. I read the conditions and found that research in a university can work! is that correct? i.e, my master thesis (scientific/engineering paper) will work?

My plan is as the following:

1- Get MEXT scholarship (interview and test next week).

2- Study there as hard as I can, get friendly with Japanese society, graduate with a master degree of engineering.
* my topic is embedded electronics design, home electronics, and robotics. this is a well-known demand-able field in Japan I guess, right?

3- Learn Japanese to fluent degree. I don't have a certain plan for this, but the first 6-months will be beginner Japanese before rolling into courses. The there are intensive Japanese courses. I guess the best method is merging with society. Can you tell me good and reliable ways/books/resources for this?

4- during my last year or so... I will start job hunt. I read that the universities I enlisted help students in this, and there are companies that always hire graduates of these universities. Anyhow, I will put a lot of efforts in this, as it is my final goal of studying in Japan.

5- When my scholarship ends, and I get the degree... I will either return to my country and apply for a work visa along with the employer support. Or do as you said, which is applying from Japan. I understood from your post that getting an employer agreement to sponsor my visa is everything! So, it is more logical to apply right from Japan rather that returning to my country, no need to return. I would return later after I ensure getting the job to see my family xD. I guess they allow a 10 day or so vacation.

6- I will stick into working there for as many time as it requires, then apply for permanent residence.
