No, it's not only bears: boars are making headlines, too. This one was all over the news this morning.

Wow, I used to live not too far from there.

I saw the following video when it aired lived some years ago. It's stuck with me ever since. Those guys at Toyota should learn this technique if it becomes a recurring problem. It's really interesting how the boars react to the umbrella. It's all in Japanese, but you can probably figure out what's going on.
Here's video in English that explains it (at least the audio is English on my browser). Sadly it's only pictures, but the other Japanese video above actually shows someone using this technique.

The video seems to be about repelling your little sister. But maybe it works on boars too.

Interesting. This is a screenshot of what I see.

Ah, lol! I actually did watch the video, but I didn't notice that.
I bet it would work on one's little sister, though. Or random people on the street. Especially if you mutter incoherently at the same time.

I think one reason wild animals such as wild boars, and even bears have started entering residential areas is that dogs are now mostly kept indoors. In the past, there were more outdoor dogs and stray dogs, and their barking and scent may have made wild animals more cautious about approaching human settlements. I don't think this is the only reason, but it may be one of the factors.
