Why I am Learning

Hi Guys,
I am trying to explain why I started learning Japanese.
In English I am saying.
At first I started learning because I wanted to communicate with Japanese people more easily, now I do it just for fun.

My Attempt:

最初私は日本勉強していてでにほんじんいもうやさしいそつうができます
でもいまたのしいだけでしています

Is this alright does it make sense?

Japanes language is 日本語, not 日本.

easily : かんたんに

Have you learned structures such like ～から/ので for "because"?

かんたんにできてから roughly means "after I can do it easily".

Just curious, are you using a texbook or something?

Yes a mixture of textbooks, internet, talking etc。 I might try a break down of my sentences.

At first I
最初私は

with japanese people
ほんじんと

little simpler to communicate wanted to be able to
もうかんたんにそつうができたい

because
から

studied japanese
にほんごべんきょうしました

but now
でもいま

just for fun
たのしみだけで

am doing.
しています

So all together I have.

最初私はほんじんともうかんたんにそつうができたいからにほんごべんきょうしました
でもいまたのしみだけでしています

～たい form can't be attached directly with できる. It should be ～できるようになりたい "to want to become to be able to~".

"Wanted" is past.

simpler / more easily: もっとかんたんに

から has completely different meanings between ～たいから and ～てから. That's why から in your previous translation means "after".

Is your's a more natural way to say it? I have used そつう for communication is that ok? or not used in spoken japanese?

You'll have to learn some new structures to accurately express what you are trying to say.

You don't need 私 since that is implied. I would use は in front of 最初 and 今. The は here has the grammatically meaning of comparing and contrasting 2 situations.

疎通（そつう） is usually used with 意思疎通. It is a fairly formal word for communicate and I don't think that's what you are trying to say.
Use コミュニケーションを取る

と means with so it is 日本人と

You need the を after 日本語. I would not drop particles when you are just starting out.

"Doing something for fun" is an English idiom and idioms won't translate between languages. 楽しい or variations of cannot really be used here. I would use 趣味程度で（しゅみていど） which roughly mean as a hobby for fun, but not taking it THAT seriously.

You can also use 下手の横好き which is an Japanese idiom meaning something you really enjoy/love but have not mastered.

In the last sentence, you really need to use やる to re-iterate 日本語を勉強する.

で indicates "means" when used with できるようになりたい. と is correct.

コミュニケーションを取る is more common for "to communicate", as Morphling-san translated.

I would use たのしいからやっています for the last sentence.

Thanks heaps for all your help. For now I think I'll use a mixture of all your inputs. Not only will it communicate what I want to say but it is also great for the Grammar structure and spoken Japanese. Now for the practice.

最初は日本人でもっとかんたんにコミュニケーションを取るができるようになりたいから日本語を勉強しました。
でもいまはたのしいからやっています。

Almost there. It still needs to be 日本人と.
日本人とコミュニケーションを取る。 To communicate with Japanese people.
日本人でコミュニケーションを取る。Use Japanese people to communicate.

There are two ways to say to be able to.
コミュニケーションを取られる - or -
コミュニケーションを取ることができる

Your sentence doesn't mention anything about studying Japanese so you need to put that back in.

It's 取ることができる

After でも, it should be 、 not 。

日本人で = among Japanese people
日本人と = with Japanese people

コミュニケーションを取るができる doesn't make sense. If you put こと between 取る and できる you're fine, though.

から doesn't start sentences very often, if ever.

You probably don't want to say "because but", do you?

You can rephrase 取ることができるようになりたい using the potential form. 取る is a godan verb.

You don't need ことができる if you use 取られる. It should be 取られるようになる.

Also なりたい should be in its past form as you are talking about the past, so it should be なりたかった.

I would replace でも with けど to form one sentence, i.e. 日本語を勉強しましたけど、いまは…

Just one correction

取られる --> 取れる

No problem with ～なりたいから日本語を勉強しました。けど～. 最初 and しました shows it's past, so there is no difference between なりたいから and なりたかったから here.

Your second translation 最初私はほんじんともうかんたんにそつうができたいからにほんごべんきょうしましたでもいまたのしみだけでしています became far better than the first one, since I can undersatnd what you want to say. The last one is perfect!

けど can be used as a conjunction as same as でも.
