I am curious, for what purpose do you take N3 and below? As far as I understand it, they serve no practical purpose other than a sense of self accomplishment. Am I missing something? My college would not even exempt me from taking Intermediate Japanese 1 and 2 with a passing score in N3.

I did get N-4 last sunday. I know that I failed it. Looking for next in may. woo-hoo!!! ... ewww ...
Generally you should be doing a lot of reading/listening, including of non-fiction. Reading speed seems to be something that trips a lot of people up (but of course having done N3 you probably have some idea of where your weak points are likely to be).
The one thing I wish I'd done was practice note-taking for the longer listening questions.
