I don't know. I took the JLPT in Denmark and they don't have it in the summer. If so I have to fly to London. Which would be fun but I don't know if I can spare the money... I guess I'll take it in December. But not sure yet. Would be fun to see London

I am curious, for what purpose do you take N3 and below? As far as I understand it, they serve no practical purpose other than a sense of self accomplishment. Am I missing something? My college would not even exempt me from taking Intermediate Japanese 1 and 2 with a passing score in N3.

No purpose, even N1 to me is as useful as toilet paper career wise since I am in finance. However learning Japanese itself provides with enough utility as a hobby and I am using N5, N4, N3, N2, N1 as a progression benchmark.

I took it just for fun but I'm sure once you reach N2 level your reading ability will improve. I'm not sure about listening as I feel it is not enough to hear something like business or anime/games?

I'm studying for N1 or N2 for next year. I took a mock exam for N3 and didn't have much of a problem. However, I really don't see any point in taking it officially.

T_T It's hard as a rock. I think I failed. Kanji and orthography was quite good. Vocab and reading is so so. But listening and grammar was terrible. Maybe I have to try harder and take the next July. T_T

Mid-year exam in July and there is no mid-year exam in United States, you gonna have to go to Edmonton in Canada

Got my N3 certificate, Passed with flying colours >> 99/180 4 marks above pass mark...


Any ways, the certificate was damaged in the mail, paid $90 AUD for the test and Japan foundation can't even be bothered to put a cardboard or some sort of protection. Or at least a do not bent stamp or something.

I'd complain to whoever administered the test where you took it. I did mine at SOAS at London and they sent the certificate in a cardboard-backed, do-not-bend envelope, so it must be down to the local partners.

My N4 certificate was also sent in a cardboard-backed, "DO NOT BEND"-marked envelope. It was a little bent in one corner, but otherwise in fine condition. I barely passed though; 53.8%. >_<

For N2 I used どんな時どう使う (the version aimed at old 1/2級)to go over grammar and revised kanji a bit on the DS (kanken-style questions, since I think you're familiar with those). Vocab lists bore me stupid so I didn't use any.

Generally you should be doing a lot of reading/listening, including of non-fiction. Reading speed seems to be something that trips a lot of people up (but of course having done N3 you probably have some idea of where your weak points are likely to be).

The one thing I wish I'd done was practice note-taking for the longer listening questions.

Could you recommend some good online materials for listening (intermediate level) ? It is always my weak point and I'm going to give up on the comprehension with %$#$memorizing questions to focus more on quick response. Aside from anime is there any good website for learning greeting, conversation. Anime and manga seems too much to affort for me so I want to find something... simple.

By the way... good luck for those taking JLPT this July.

A lot depends on the definition of 'intermediate'. I used to use jpod101 a few years back, not sure what it's like now.

Things that are aimed at native speakers but intended to be educational might be suitable (in terms of type of language used). For example, there's a series called 簡単ルールで 一生きれいな字 on youtube which is about how to make your kanji handwriting better. Or if you're into programming, 3窶｢ﾂｪ窶慊ｮ窶ｰﾃｦ窶堙?筑ﾆ湛ﾆ耽ﾂー窶堋ｷ窶堙ｩﾂ鞘?ｰﾂ心ﾅｽﾃ椎津ｼ窶堋ｯﾆ致ﾆ陳哉丹ﾆ停?ｰﾆ蓄ﾆ停?愴丹ﾅ?wﾂ習ﾆ探ﾆ辰ﾆ暖 - ﾆ檀ﾆ鍛ﾆ暖ﾆ辰ﾆ停?愴湛ﾆ暖ﾂーﾆ停?ｹ has a series of short videos explaining various things. Or if neither of those things appeal, throw some appropriate Japanese keywords into google or youtube.
