The short answer is that there isn't any city or town in Japan where most of the buildings from the Edo period survive. At best there are a few mountain villages like Shirakawago or places in the Kiso Valley (e.g.Tsuwago and Magome).
Usually, the few cities that still have Edo period architecture only have just a few preserved streets. That's the case of Kyoto , Takayama, or Kurashiki, to name the most famous ones.
Kawagoe was destroyed by a fire in 1893 and the few traditional kurazukuri houses left in the centre date from the Meiji period .
