The Wrath of Kan

I'm not impressed by Kan and his administration, especially that lightweight Maehara, but I support his intention to take care of the budget deficit. Anyone with a sense of responsibility to the next generation should support it, so those Diet members threatening to defect should be taken in the back and kicked in the head.

If they go through with their threat to block his proposed budget, Kan should sit tight and refuse to submit any other budget risking a gov't shutdown just like in Washington. (A couple of years of No gov't spending would help the budget deficit afterall.) But I don't know if Kan has the cajones to do that.:?

If Kan wants to show some leadership in deficit reduction, he should order the government to sell its unnecessary assets, like all its shares in Japan Tobacco. The government has no business owning it anyway.

Never Let a Good Crisis Go to Waste

While I'm hoping for a favorable outcome to the nuclear crisis, I think it would be good for Kan to implement the following emergency measures and show more leadership:

1. Implement an immediate 5% tax on luxury goods and alcohol to help pay for recovery measures. An additional slight tax on cigarettes would also help.

2. Institute a daylight savings program for this summer to conserve energy.

3. Disperse economic activity to t
he Kansai region, it's too concentrated in Tokyo.


4. Launch the solar generators in geostationary orbit asap. They may be much safer than nuclear power.

The reconstruction will most likely be paid by the BOJ via the purchasing of JGBs, with additional benefits of weakening the Yen and ending deflation.

Nuclear power is completely safe! The Fukushima nuclear power plant troubles is a tale of human incompetence, not the dangers of nuclear energy. Hell, replace all the current nuclear reactors with thorium reactors and the risk of a meltdown would be practically zilch. Look up information on it to see what I'm talking about.

Does anyone seriously think it's a good idea to throw a new cabinet into the fray after all that has happened? Japan doesn't need political chaos too. I understand it happens quite frequently, but still.

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries & IHI have been planning a 1 Gigawatt space solar generator station for some time now. It's need has become urgent. Maybe more gov't support could speed things along.

And I want to reiterate my suggestion for a daylight savings program. Most Japanese don't like daylight savings time, but I think they would accept it this time. It could be easily and quickly implemented, hardly cost anything, and conserve an impressive amount of electricity.

These are ideas to help Kan. I think he needs a lot of help.
