What are the top ten things to see in Tokyo?

hey wat are the top ten things i must see before leaving tokyo. i was supposed to go there in the first week of november, but now i might be going next year. i'm pretty sure i can only go in the month of november cuz thats when my stepdad goes to fight in that kyokushin (or however the hell u spell it) karate tourniment.

Depends on what you like!

But when I went there I thought:

1. Sumo match! - Really cool seeing guys 5 times my width throwing each other around!

2. Harajuku station/park - People watching! Some really interesting characters - semi-goths, punks, all sorts!

3. Meiji-Jingumae Shrine (just down the road from Harajuku station).

4. Asakusa shrine - Huge tatami slippers, and a huge drum!

5. Odaiba - With the futuristic Fuji building, and a mini statue of Liberty!

6. Tokyo-Edo museum (if you're into that) - cool recreations of Tokyo's history.

7. Philippe Starck's Asahi building - near Asakusa, supposed to look like a glass of beer.

8. Sony building in Ginza - if you like technology.

9. Akihabara - also if you like technology.

10. Ueno park with the museums/Imperial palace/Shibuya!

It totally depends on your age & interests. Are you interested in historical sights? Pop culture? Shopping?

kaminoko san, you picked all good ones, as a Japanese, I think all of them are interesting. Adding to that, Kabuki play in Higashi Ginza is fun as well. The way they speak, so funny and costumes are so colourful!

i like technology and anime the most. but i want to see some historical/cultural things too. is there anything to see at mt. fuji? i'll have to go there since my step-dad has to do this meditation thing at the top. oh and if there are any anime or technology conventions around november than that would be cool.

I'm sorry, Cristal! I forget about Kabuki! Sheesh...

If you're near Mt.Fuji, go to Hakone and spend some time in the Volcanic hot springs...and climbing Mt. Fuji isn't too bad either!

For Anime...well go into any bookstore...you'll know what I mean when you get there. But not sure about English versions. Pity about the date you're going...the Anime expo is in January...here's a link for different anime conventions around the world:

For technology definitely plan on going through the Sony building in Ginza. And, of course, check out the Akihabara area for electronics/gaming shops.

Actually it's called the Edo-Tokyo museum (which still has a weird ring to it) in case someone is looking. And for some reason they are closed every Tuesday, which is when I tried to go a couple weeks ago. I was sooooo upset and disappointed....:auch: I was even thinking of making a return trip this Spring for a few days just for that (well a few other things as well)....so someone please let me know first if it's not worth going that far for.

Bad AIR day !!

I thought the air actually having a brown color you could see was pretty wild ! I had never been to a big city before so hadn't run into visible air polution. That was the early 70's so it may have changed for the better by now ?

I'm ashamed to admit that I never went to most of these places. I went by korakuen frequently enough but never went inside. I don't remember if I ever made it to the shita-machi museum or not. I know I was thinking about it. Kichioji... are you talking about a temple or the town? Kichioji is a cool town. I've never been to a temple of that name. And this is the first I've heard of Yanaka (cemetary?).

I think it's better now. I don't recall the air having a visible color though it is hazy/smoggy frequently enough. It commonly looked like this in the 90's:

I always thought Tokyo air was remarkably clean considering the population density there.

Yeah, I even had trouble with some station clerks who had never heard of Yanaka.

Maybe I should have thought to mention the cemetary but seriously it was the heart of the shitamachi district and still has a very beautiful, nostalgic feel and atmosphere if you're into that sort of thing.

The town of Kichijoji I didn't know was known outside of Suginamiku.....
but it is a very cool and relaxing little corner. I went mostly for the live bands and street musicians which play outside the station a lot (and in Inokashirakoen as well).

Is there a temple there too? I only know of the Buddhist sect (?) or something with a neighborhood one near the place I stay in Takaido that has the same first two characters and then the institution "in" but pronounced "keshouin."

And finally the Shitamachi museum is a little difficult to find but well worth it, you can even get a personal tour with an older Japanese woman who speaks fantastic English. Korakuen is very refined and quiet but romantic as well so you may feel a little lost and forlorn by yourself .
