And yes some people are damn ugly. J/k
Web blogs good or bad? Spin off from Myspace thread from Kirei.

I saw discussion coming so I decided to start it here.

Funny thing, me and a few other of my on line chat buddies are talking about this very subject on another forum. Trust me you don't want to see the opinions. I mean no offense to anybody here, but personally I find internet blogs to be the most worthless and damaging thing in the world. First of all, it's the internet. If you enjoy talking about your personal life and private situations on line for everyone in the known world to see on a blog, then you deserve to have something horribly go wrong with your account due to your immense stupidity. Secondly, if you find reading about other people's lives interesting, then you need a life yourself. Seriously, why read about some chick or guy who screwed a bunch of people at a group orgy the night before, or somebody complaining about how they had a stressful day (too damn bad the whole world had a stressful day, it's called LIFE)?! You obviously need help if you find it that interesting! Can't you do something else? Geez, find a hobby! Do you realize how many good books, songs, video games, and various other funs things that there are out there that you are missing? Hell even masturbation is a good time killer! At the very least shoot yourself. Nobody wants to deal with a stalker, or a stupid human being.

So in closing I really hate on line blogs, and if you don't then I feel sorry for you. Thank you.

I don't see how a person deserves something bad for sharing interesting events in thier life. You know it is also good therapy for people who need to vent or talk about problems. for the most part if people don't care then they do not have to read a blog. I have one and I spend alot of time with my "Hobby's games friends, ladies <yeah baby> son, work, language studies. Mines fits into my lifestyle b/c I study Japanese so I keep my Blog in Japanese. My friend in Fukuoka loves reading it b/c she can learn more about me while I am offline or unavailable. My opnion is that you need to rethink the reasons why some people do what they do. I think your judgement on a person who keeps a blog is quite harsh to go as far as telling them to commit suicide. That is not joking matter. But like I said it is my opnion.

Good point Damicci. I think that if you have a problem with people who have blogs, then you also should have a problem with people who post on forums right? I mean we must all really be losers right? I can't tell you how many times I've read someone's truly un-interesting post about how they still live with their mom, or how truly bad their day has been...I mean isn't it the exact same thing?

At least in my eyes it is. Bottom line is...if you don't like blogs...don't read them...but don't put the people down who choose to have one.

I don't think there's anything wrong with them. I don't go into anything too personal on mine, anyway. It's not like I go into a long spill about how I'm depressed that so-and-so is doing such-and-such or something like that. I also don't approve of people making fun of other people on them or anything of that matter. I think they can be very damaging in that way. As long as I'm just using it to communicate with some friends, I don't see anything wrong with it. I've been cut off from my messengers lately, and it's one way I have of staying in touch.

I have quite a busy life. Many more things take up much more time than my blog. After all the running around I do with the kids, taking care of a house and everything in it, and countless other things I'm responsible for, I feel that I'm entitled to check up on a few friends by way of blogs.

That is all.

Well if you're going to have a blog at least post something with relevance, you know? Posting your daily routine everyday and your innermost secrets are a bit retarded IMHO. If you would have read my disclaimer (which you obviously didn't), the suicide thing wasn't directed toward anybody. However, I feel if you are that desperate for friends that all you do is read on line blogs then you really do need help. I mean I don't spend all day on a forum like some people here I know do.

On line communication should never replace real life communication, and if it does then you really are obsessing too much over the internet, and that is a bad thing believe it or not. I'm not against all bloggers, just people who have to post every little interact detail about themselves that just screams "in six months this will be the next identity theft victim". I just don't like bloggers who spend all day on them, or post irrelevant or extremely personal information that's all. Oh and those who are into because it's a fad going around your campus or place of business. Blogging can be fun, but there should be a certain set of seriousness involved as well to keep that experience fun. Do you understand what I mean? So I'm not against all bloggers, but I would expect some people to use common sense you know?

Also if anybody thinks that blogging is perfect for keeping in contact with friends and family, that's what e-mail is for. Speaking of which if you use a little handle piece of freeware like I have for your e-mail, you won't need blogs to keep up with ever changing locations, numbers, and e-mail addresses. It's actually rather convenient. :-) So does that help you any Damicci?

That's a funny statement for you to make considering you joined the forum 8 months after me, yet you have made 150 more posts!:p

Not to mention many of those posts (probably 2/3) are meaningless rants about how your life sucks, or how other people screwed you over by not paying your bills for you, or even your favorite subjects of lately; sex and masturbation!

I read your post doc. Which Is why I said it wasn't anything to joke about. That is a harsh statement whether joking or not. I have read alot of your posts and have agreed with you for many but This last one was just wrong IMHO.

That's understandable Damicci. However, you have to remember I am an acquired taste after all. My humor and train of thought is not for everyone. That's why I made that little disclaimer. You did not find it funny, but there are others that I know who do. I apologize if there was any misunderstanding, but just keep in mind I am not for everybody. I think that if you did understand me better you would know where I am coming from, but such a topic is extremely unnecessary at this point in time as it would derail your thread. Just try not to take everything that I post at face value, because my meanings are not always what you think okay?

Before I say anything, I want to give that statement an applause. 👍
*respectful pause*
Of course, online communication is a great thing when it can open up the world to you. And to make more friends and stuff. But there has to be a line drawn. I consider my time spent more valuably picking up the phone and talking to a friend, than sitting at the computer typing out an email or even talking on messenger. Or even - shock horror! - actually going round to a friend's house and helping them out with something! ^^

Anyway - topic. Blogs.

I always hated the idea of keeping a journal (this is in the days before blogs, when journals were of the good old paper variety). I don't mean any offence to people who keep one, but they struck me as self-absorbed, unnecessary and, well, full of useless drivel that you would never read over and which no one else would ever read either. I had one or two attempts at keeping one out of curiosity as to why people do it, and gave up very quickly as they were so truly awful they made me cringe. And I kept forgetting to write in them.

Then, recently I read a study which said that people who journal have significantly lower levels of stress than people who don't (there were findings given but unfortunately I can't remember them ><). So I thought, Aha! maybe it's worth a try. Hence almost a week ago I started a MySpace. Which I already have trouble remembering to write in...

Well, only time will tell whether I keep up with it. But actually, there is something therapeutic in writing things down. Not because of being self-absorbed, but the actual process of putting things in words helps you to think through and rationalise. Have you not found this when you are making a post on an issue that matters to you? That while you type about it, your thoughts clarify because you have to make them understandable to your readers? I think journals work in a similar way. Sometimes, you can write something and you can see immediately that your attitude is stupid. Or that someone's behaviour is out of order. Or whatever. So if it helps the individual, that's fine. No one is asking me to read other people's blogs if I think they're full of drivel!

About the keeping in touch issue - yeah, I actually much prefer to send an email rather than rely on someone reading my blog (in fact I'm sure no one does - if they do, I feel sorry for them because they should have better things to do than read the crap that I write!). But, there is the thing that a blog isn't time-specific. You can dip in at any time, if you just think, Oh, I wonder what so-and-so has been up to lately? You can go and check out their journal. And they don't have to bother sending a round of emails to all their friends, but can just type in one place and keep everyone updated at the same time.

To be honest, the fact that I have internet access at work makes a big difference to whether or not I keep a blog. I was joking about being "bored at work", but the fact I have all-day access does give me the time to do that kind of thing. If I didn't, I certainly wouldn't have the time at home to keep a blog.

I also used to be paranoid about personal information, but you can of course use common sense! I'm sure anyone who knew me personally would know who I am from my blog, but if you don't, you can't find out my real name, bank account details, address, or that kind of personal stuff.

I guess the upshot of my long post is that I'm indifferent one way or the other. If people enjoy to keep a blog, then good for them! And I don't care whether it's interesting to read as long as it makes them feel good. And as for myself, I don't care if I make one or not... I'm trying as an experiment... so many people do it, so there may be something of good in it, I want to see... :p

I'm indifferent towards blogs. I don't read them and I don't keep one. I don't think anyone would want to read "Got up, went to work, came home, played on PS, went to bed", which is pretty much my life. I don't need it for stress relief as I am lucky to have a good friend at work and a supportive husband that I can talk too. I did keep a diary when I was a teenager though - I wrote all the things in there that I couldn't talk to anyone about. I think it helped.

Most of my contact with other people is online, because that suits my personality. I have to deal with people at work and I don't enjoy it. I just don't like being around people. But I do like sharing ideas, which is why forums are ideal for me. I get to talk to like-minded people and discuss things with unlike-minded people without them being in my face! I also keep in touch with most of my real-life friends online as I like the unobtrusive-ness of e-mail and messengers - I can reply to e-mails in my own time, and set my messenger to 'appear offline'! Also, I'm not good at putting things into words, and I like that I can review what I want to say before hitting submit!
