This made it into the national news yesterday and was shown on TV all day.

Osaka watermelon

A watermelon that was found growing on the median of a bustling road in the center of Osaka City was carefully dug up on Tuesday to be relocated. City officials had decided to transplant the fruit, as people could enter the busy road to take pictures or damage it. The officials said they have no idea how it came to be growing there. Workers placed the watermelon, which measures about 12 by 10 centimeters, in a planter with fertilizer and soil. An official said it's surprising that the fruit has grown to that size in such an environment. He said watermelons are annual plants, so this one will die when it gets colder. But he said he hopes citizens can enjoy it, even for a short while. The city is still deciding where to keep it.
