Wanted to ask about 通り過ぎる and 通る

Hi!

I have been given both 通り過ぎる and 通る in my lessons as pass, pass by, pass through. Apparently there is a lot of overlap between the two, but are there times when only one or the other is correct? Also, any nuances between the two?

There seems to be quite a difference, with 通り過ぎる meaning to pass a place and go to the other side (ある所を通って向こうへ行く。通りこす。通り過ぎる), and 通る meaning a whole bunch of other things.

The subject of 通り過ぎる is ALWAYS the thing/person that moves, thus, you can't say 道路が通り過ぎる instead of 道路が通っている.
There is another similar expression 通り抜ける. This means "to pass through inside of something", just as トンネルを通り抜ける, 公園を通り抜ける, 放射線が身体の中を通り抜ける. The subject of 通り抜ける is also the thing/person that moves, as same as 通り過ぎる.

Ok I think I have it now.
通る is pretty general (I passed the test, he can pass as a teenager if he shaves, the light passes through the lens).
通り過ぎる seems a lot more specific: a moving subject going past a particular landmark.

I've never heard 通る used for passing a test, but if it is, it is idiomatic. Try 合格する for passing a test.

I found these examples at Denshi Jisho. They mix up things somestime though, so if these are not correct then it would not surprise me.

容易に試験に通ると思う。 I expect her to pass the examination easily.

彼は試験に通るために一生懸命勉強した。 He studied hard so as to pass the examination.

試験に通るには６０点取らないといけない。 You have to get 60 marks to pass the exam.

Those mean "get through" the exam, which by logical extension implies receiving a satisfactory mark. But it is idiomatic in nature. For non-idiomatic situations, use 合格する.

Unlike 通る, を is not used for 合格する instead of に.

So I suppose in general 道を通る would be simply to use or travel along a road.

Not always so. を can indicate the location where the subject passes, as same as 道を歩く. For instance, 車が猛スピードで道路を通り過ぎていった doesn't imply "to miss the route". It usually just means "to pass by the point of view of the writer/speaker along a road". Of course を also can indicate the passing point, e.g., 私の横を通り過ぎていった. I think 通り越す would be more appropiate for your case.

Oh, yes. It should be the transitive 通り越す along what we see with a similar pattern of 乗り過ごす etc. I think I may have misunderstand the long ago English explanation of a Japanese speaker.
